Re: Recommend us your favourite songs

This thread is great, some really nice stuff coming out. I could only find live videos of cam penner on youtube, but it sounds pretty good.

We put together a compilation of our favourite female singers who are some of our biggest influences (at least on the girls). Some of the most beautiful music I've heard, both new and old. For when you are feeling melancholic:

Thanks for the link. I'm already big fan of a couple of women on that list (Laura Marling, Regina Spektor), but I'll enjoy listening to the rest.

Here's a link to a Cam Penner song ('Roam') that comes from the CD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saioF_vgl_o

I've recently become obsessed with Bon Iver - Skinny Love. It's a weird love/hate thing; love his writing and guitar playing, hate his falsetto vocals!

This is an awesome live version

Everything is easier said than done.

Except talking.

That's about the same.

No way, I love his vocals. Flume and Lump sum are haunting.
We home recordists can also take heart from the fact that he recorded his whole debut album by himself in a tiny log cabin in the middle of nowhere, I believe with 1 mic.

I, too, love Bon Iver. Unique, haunting, great stuff.

Re: Recommend us your favourite songs

Have a listen to Jodie Marie. She's had a few singles out and her album is coming out in March.  She's a really good artist who shows some real depth of personality in her music. She's going to do very well  I reckon! Her song 'What Would It Take' is one of my favourite songs ever.

Re: Recommend us your favourite songs

I'm very lyric oriented so I absolutely adore everything from Stephen Sondheim, I particulary recomend Someone in a tree, Opening doors, Johanna quintet and The miracle song.

And he also writes some heart breaking ballads like Loving you, Losing my mind, Not a day goes by and Anyone can whistle.

The man is a genius! Or maybe I'm just too gay jaja, anyway, check him some of his stuff

Love this thread..to chip in on the La's chat...saw them in 1987 supporting All About Eve!!...it was between the sets that I first heard Tom Trauberts Blues by Tom Waits...been my fav song ever since...

here's a few links to David Ford vids on youtube...clever talented melodic emotional...ticks all the boxes in my book. Think he's a bit fed up being told he's "the next big thing"...but he's awesome!!!

Re: Recommend us your favourite songs

A bit of my favourite recent pop music for ya Wink

'Quick' by The Magnetic Fields:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTbMcHAzE0A

'Silver Tongue' by Zulu Winter:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCArCBjlinQ&ob=av2e

'We Were Children' by Tribes:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52QHnUF13hs&ob=av2e

(Whose melody I loved so much I had to make a string quartet arrangement - http://youtu.be/SKRnaHY4SHA - bit of shameless self-promotion / spam Smiley )

If you're of an indie rock persuasion I don't think you can do much better than Steve Lamacq's blog - http://goingdeafforaliving.com/blog. This one http://goingdeafforaliving.com/blog/162/mc-rut in particular is a belter (although not strictly suggesting any new bands!).
And it might be worth sending in a demo: http://goingdeafforaliving.com/demos
Never know, might find yourself on 6 Music of an afternoon. Wink

Re: Recommend us your favourite songs

Great thread guys, Beautiful South and Gordon Lightfoot ahh, awesome, especially 'if you could read my mind'. My absolute favourites are Fleet Foxes, especially the Helplessness Blues album, and in particular the title track 'helplessness blues', 'the shrine' and 'blue spotted tail'. Such a good band, seen them live and they are pitch perfect with the harmonies, its actually a bit of an obsession of mine at the mo, can't stop listening to them. I've posted the links below.
