These are the Things

The things that drive us nuts today become golden memories all too soon. So don't forget to enjoy the ride.

THESE ARE THE THINGS

What do you do? Little fingers on the new paint
These are the things, O Lord
Henry spills our last half pint across the table
These are the things, O Lord

These are the things that make us shout
Snatch our keys as we thunder out
Knowing always we’ll return
Come the day when there’s time and cash together
The chaos long behind us
Turns to golden years

Shattered glass means just one more bill to work for
These are the things, O Lord
You finally sleep so the dogs start taking over
These are the things, O Lord

These are the things that make us shout
Snatch our keys as we thunder out
Knowing always we’ll return
Come the day when there’s time and cash together
The chaos long behind us
Turns to golden years

Laboured words slip my mind beneath your questions
These are the things, O Lord
Working years rob the soul of its expression
These are the things, O Lord

These are the things that make us shout
Snatch our keys as we thunder out
Knowing always we’ll return
Come the day when there’s time and cash together
The chaos long behind us
Turns to golden years

Re: These are the Things

The first thig that strikes me is the excellent mix and the beautiful harmonies I would love that sort of production myself it is broadcast standard.
Also wonderful topic it`s the type of thing that makes you appreciate life more.
What I did find however was that after the first minute there were no real suprises or shifts in the song to keep me engaged. I think this stems from the fact your verses are very, very short when compared to your chorus and no bridge.
I was once given the advice to make my verses longer than the chorus, this gives the melody more chance to develop and more time to expand the idea lyrically, which i would really like to hear on this topic. For me the first vs chorus combo could have been a verse after two of these launch into a next gear chorus back to 1vs then ch bridge ch outro. Ta da your on the radio.
 Good Luck. Love that sound.

Re: These are the Things

Firstly Jordan I think the instrumentation sounds very dated which instantly schewed my view, sorry Shocked

But when you see past that it's a lovely melody, lyric and probaly the best backing vocals I have heard on this forum

Good classic songwriting , right up my street  Grin

Re: These are the Things

hi jordan
very nicely done, really clever, youve really got your ‘thing’ together. (or other peoples things together..)
point is your songs all sound like pastiche to me, like neil innes does so well with the Rutles/Beatles thing , its great but not original.. you'll probably do well though so good luck

on this track it seems to be Toto crossed with the Beach Boys and Penny Lane, beautifully done, cant criticise you for it though as you do it so well, but try and write an original....

nooms

edit.  just reread this and it sounds harsh ..dont mean to be, just like to hear you write a 'real' song...shit thats doesnt sound right either..
think you knowwhat i mean
all the best , nooms

Re: These are the Things

Hiya Smiley
First of all this is a very well written song. Harmonies are perfect, and the production is brilliant.
Everything about it is spot on, but I have to be honest here Jordon and agree with nooms.

I think he did pretty well getting across what I was thinking.

The Rutles/Beatles was a pretty good analogy.

I really don't want to be harsh either because technically it was great, but it is all so standard and just really a replica

of some of those artists that nooms mentioned.

You obviously have talent... I'm stuggling to think or what to suggest though or whether I should even be so arrogant to...

Like nooms I also have trouble being honest on here sometimes Sad

I think I would stop trying to emulate so perfectly what has been before and chuck what you already know around a bit

and see what new things you find?

To get a review, give some reviews. Give and take. Simples. If that's too complicated........

Re: These are the Things

You're right. It is a kind of tribute/pastiche of some favourite records. But it's not fake but heartfelt, and a good vehicle for the words.
