I don't know if barfly is the right term. I can think of a few others!  :-)

Barfly:

Down the local boozer
That's his habitat
Winding up the barmaid
While emptying the taps

Look in through the windows
Give the place a scan
If you didn't spot him
He's either dead or banned

(Ch)
Barfly - steaming drunk
Barfly - fill 'em up
Barfly - falling down
Barfly - buzzing around

He's a real nuisance
Always stands too near
While you read the paper
He'll syphon off your beer

Lurches to the jukebox
Will you help him choose?
Don't go to the bathroom
He might piss on your shoes

(Ch)
Barfly - steaming drunk
Barfly - fill 'em up
Barfly - falling down
Barfly - buzzing around

(Br)
Kick him out at closing time
Takes an hour to say goodbye
Then he'll slump into a cab
Head to toe in shish kebab

(Ch)
Barfly - steaming drunk
Barfly - fill 'em up
Barfly - falling down
Barfly - buzzing around

Barfly
Buzz buzz buzz
Barfly
Buzz buzz buzz....

Visit our town on a Friday or Saturday night you'll see a lot of these guys!

Loved it, especially the 'syphon off your beer' and 'head in toe to shish kebab' lines. Never heard the term barfly, though it's a great word.

Good write :)

Its normal practice to get someones permission before writing a song about them, I have notified my lawyers accordingly.

Loved this. I think I have met dozens of these guys in my younger days. You can read into that, that I dont frequent pubs anymore ( cheaper to have a good quality cab sav at home ). What a goid story, you captured the bar fly perfectly. A great insight into this breed.

Allan.

Hi Paul, Snowman and Allan,

Thanks for the read.

I'm not sure if barfly is a term that's caught on in the UK. Although there are lots of terms for this kind of guy.

My alternative title was a bit more on the coarse side!

I was going to say it isn't autobiographical but the more I read it....

Cheers!

Phil.

Phil loved the humour,  imagary and characterisation.  duryrsque.
If they're serving Brains SA then I think the taxi/kebab is probably safe!!

Hi Neil,

Well they don't call it skull attack for nothing!

This would have been even more like Ian Dury if I'd gone with the alternative title which was similar to 'Blockhead'!

Cheers,

Phil.

This so much reminds me of Paul Heaton's `Liars Bar` and that's the biggest compliment I can make as I consider him one of the top ten songwriters of all time.

Loved every element of it and not going to bother trying to find any minor faults, because it's just too good.

Can't wait to hear it set to music.

Hi Arkwright,

Thanks for that.

This sort of individual is par for the course in the pubs I frequent!

And Neil,

Look forward to it. Should be fun!

Cheers,

Phil.

Hi Verlon,

Thanks for the read.

I can think of a few in the places I go to.  And they're just the people that work there!

Cheers,

Phil.
