Okay so I have a major flaw when it comes to writing lyrics, and this is that I'll have about 3 weeks of nothing but guitar riffs or melodies, then 1 week where I can write lyrics to the best of my ability and I chug out at least 6 or so songs.. My problem is, in that 1 week where I'm writing, I have a certain thing on my mind and I have trouble writing about new things. Lately all that's jumped to mind for me has been depression and drugs because that's just what my mind has been set on lately, but I want to write something different... Any ideas? Thanks

If you're churning out 6 songs per month, then I wouldn't say you have a lyric writing flaw! :o

I struggle to write a song a month, and I wouldn't say it's a flaw. It's just really difficult.

But as for suggestions, I would say reading is excellent for bringing new ideas, stories, moods and images into the mind. Also, do something different, outside of your normal routine. Go somewhere new, speak to an old friend you've lost touch with, learn a new skill. All of these things will find their way into your songwriting, whether you're aware of it or not.

One last thing: read the lyrics from the best songwriters - always a good one.

Good luck :)

Thanks a lot :) I went and did a lot of stuff lately and right now I'm sat on about 10 song lyrics that I'm gonna post over the next few weeks, and they're not all about the same stuff! I've written about marriage, the woods, one of my friends who's really great at ignoring things, and a few other depressing things that don't matter... But thank you so much!
