Hello everyone,

This isn't really a question about recording, but it is kind of about tech, so I thought the geek section would probably be the right place for it!  ;D

Has anyone tried www.avs4you.com for converting audio files between different file types, and if so, what was your experience?

I'm asking on behalf of a friend who is worried about what happens to his copyright in his songs when he runs them through this type of converter software. He is concerned because he used avs and when he got his converted file back it came with a title stating that the song was written by.... (and then stated another person's name that he didn't recognise). I read the EULA that's on the website and I couldn't see anything that said that by using the software the user would be agreeing to give up any of their IP rights. In any case, I would have thought that would be an unlikely business model for a legit business offering this type of software, and a bit of a weird way to run a scam... (although scammers are after all pretty weird people so you never know!...)

I am sure there must be a reasonable explanation, and it can't be that his copyright has been taken, but I can't test the software to see what happens because they don't support mac (and I think you have to pay for it anyway). Does anyone else have any experience with this (or similar) software?

Also, can anyone recommend any alternatives that are free or inexpensive (and, of course, un-dodgy!)?

Thanks!  ;D

I would guess they have just embedded their details into the converted file (eg within an MP3 tag)

There is no chance that they would be able to claim any copyright over the recorded material so I don't think this is anything to worry about

For simple conversion I have had great success with the DVDVideoSoft "Free Studio" suite

http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/free-dvd-video-software.htm#.VE7Qgvk_t8E

You get quite a few "nag screens" on the free version but this only takes a few clicks

I have used it to capture YouTube vids, audio from YouTube vids, video and audio file conversion

Every time I have used the "online" services out there they have downloaded "nasties" (adware etc.)

So far the DVDVideoSoft stuff has been fantastic with no nasty surprises - I highly recommend it
