I'm reading up on music libraries but I'm very distracted and confused ...

Does your music have to be a polished production ready for airplay before you upload it?
They're, there, their  ...  They're all different!

Pretty much. Since the music technology boom, you can't get just music accepted to libraries unless it recorded to a high professional standard. That's just what you're up against these days, and one of the main reasons I'm now learning everything I can cram into my tiny brain about music production - because I can't afford to pay for mixing etc every time I commit something to 'tape'

If your recordings stand up as performances, I recommend getting a couple mixed and mastered by a pro - this will give you a clear indication of whether your music can compete with what else is out there, and hopefully give you some motivation to keep chipping away at it.

Back in the day when my father in law used to write library music, he'd send them demos or even scores, and they'd pay for the studio time and orchestra :o Glory days, eh?

TONE is right

When you submit music to music libraries nowadays you are submitting the "product", so it needs to be ready for someone to just download and use

I guess it is technically possible you might have something sooooo good someone is willing to pay for it to be recorded - but bearing in mind the competition will have everything ready to go I think it would be foolish to take this route

Even pitching songs to artists (which are more likely to be re-recorded) need to be "radio ready" so you either need to get yourself a little setup (and knowledge, skills etc.) to churn out release ready music or invest in some studio time

I would recommend our very own JAMES NIGHTHAWK if you have a few ideas that need polishing or recording

I second that recommendation - James is a great engineer with lots of experience, and a bloody nice bloke to boot. :)

ShinyThang, your question was about production quality, but you might be interested in checking out Music Library Report.
http://musiclibraryreport.com

There's a wealth of information, and very active exchanges regarding the quality of the licensing agencies themselves, who is accepting submissions, and what the criteria are.

Could be useful. ;)

ShinyThang -

I've just finished work on a song of mine for a production library.

5 versions - one full, one instrumental, 1 min looped version, 30 second version and 5 second burst. All edited in detail.

It's a lot of work but hopefully worthwhile.

As with all things musical these days, it's got to be right.

Why do you need a 5 second version? Is that like intended for ringtones or something? ??? ;D

It's for quick bursts that identify that particular brand Jess.

They all have them - INTEL / MACD'S...

Also short bursts linking scenes etc

I think it's also for other uses - e.g. TV programming. There may be a section just before/ after a commercial break where they'll play a 5 seconds version of the theme to help state that the programme is back. Countdown has one of these (do-do do-do diddly-do) :D

[edit]
I am a moron. Short bursts linking scenes. Yes. I somehow didn't see that first time round :p
