I just want to know if anybody had any success with Music X-Ray or Audio Rokit?
What they offer looks quite interesting to me, but is it worth it?

Any experience?

I have been offered a publishing deal through Audio Rokit

The publisher seems super keen but has yet to sort out the contracts - although they do still appear to be proceeding as if I am signed (pitching my songs etc.) so they are working for me, which is better than having the songs sitting on my PC and if I get a better offer in the meantime I am not tied to anyone

I have found Audio Rokit to be more aimed at those that want to be an artist AND song writer, although there are still opportunities to just submit songs

They do have a vetting process but I am sure any "tom, dick or harry" could list themselves as a label looking for acts o you need to keep your wits about you

It is really cheap to give it a go for a few months so it is worth a crack

I have let my subscription expire for now but will probably go back when I have a new batch of songs

I also think that Audio Rokit is more for artists than for songwriters only. But it's good to hear that it works.
By the way, Boydie, I've listened to your songs on SoundCloud - they're awesome; great stuff. Are you singing the songs by yourself?

Thank you very much   8)

The male vocals are me  ;D

I have been very lucky in finding a few awesome female vocalists to record some of my tracks - big thanks to CACO and GARNER!

I've used musicxray. I'm fairly unhappy with the process. Each song must be submitted for 'diagnostics' before it can be submitted to opportunities. No problem with that in general, but:
  • the diagnostics give you only an average, not individual feedback
  • diagnostics all assume you are an artist looking for a label
  • it takes forever to get 5 listens/ratings
  • there is no where for you to state that you are not a performer, but a song writer.

Each diagnostic costs $10 and gets you 5 ratings from industry professionals. Again, I'm fine with the price, it's quite a deal. But... you have no indication who those pros are. Nothing indicates whether they are mostly hiphop/rock/folk/country/what-have-you. So no way to know if they actually fit the genre of the song. I write in more than one genre. He who likes rock might detest country!

Second, I've had songs sit for 2 months before getting 5 reviews.
Third, no feedback, just a rating that is averaged over all the reviews. That isn't helpful. Does a 3 mean everyone thinks it's a 3/5 or does it mean some loved it and some hate it? (Not that that indicates anything either. Millions of people hate hiphop, as an example.)

In general, I find diagnostics to be useless.

I have submitted songs for professional critique.
One got a " it's okay. I'm sure it'd be a huge hit at the pub, but it's not worth recording..." Um. Okay. Why isn't it worthy? And why, if it's likely to be a 'huge hit at the pub' is it unlikely to be a hit anywhere else? I want feedback that helps me grow. This didn't.
Another got a glowing response - 'awesome song' all the right stuff, prosody, music, lyric, etc. The only negative was ' the vocals are a little rough'. So, while this is a lovely critique for making me happy, I'm not sure it's honest and it's not really going to improve the song. (Not sure it's honest because any crit that is too good always makes me wonder. There's almost always something that could be fixed.)
On that song (vocals rough) I had to laugh. I love Neil Young, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen - none of whom has that polished perfect singing voice. I prefer non-traditional voices, and the people named (et. al.) are proof that I'm not the only one who does.

Anyway, my personal opinion of musicxray so far is that it's substantially less than ideal. I'm leaning toward joining Taxi, where at least my submissions might generate real feedback most of the time. If they reject it, they often tell you why.

Yes, I also think the diagnostics are quite expensive.
The song critiques are in vain from my point of view. I send 3 songs for critique to Stuart Epps and he wrote everytime the same - very strange. Useless. He just wanted to promote himself...
I took a look on Taxi, too. The site looks a bit confused. The membership is very expensive and you have to pay an additional submission fee of $5,00. I mean we're songwriters not millionaires ;)
I don't know why they want this extra fee, though they have such a high membership rate.

Epps did one review on mine. Generic and extremely short, I wouldn't call it a critique. He both dismissed the most as hopeless and said it would be a big hit down at the pub... So? What? Not 'commercially' viable but people would like it? Literally, he also both praised the music and dismissed it, praised the lyric and dismissed it. And he did all that in a short paragraph.

A paid review by a different reviewer,  of a different song was glowing, but not particularly helpful. Have a third song out, awaiting the critique. If I could just find someone doing balanced reviews, I'd be happy. I need to know what works, sure. I need to know what doesn't. But I also need to know why.

So far, even though Taxi is $300 the first year, it's still looking like the best option. Just to actually get input from a critical but impartial reviewer would be wonderful. The average paid critique runs $30 or more - I've got 15 songs that need input now, and others in progress. $300+$5 submission fee is looking downright economical.

Have you posted any in the review forum for feedback?

(apologies if you have - I am behind with "non-Christmas" reviews at the moment but hope to catch up soon)

I think you would get some very valuable and impartial feedback from the great members on here

If you are specific in your original post the feedback can be tailored to your needs - eg. "I plan on pitching this for the next "boy band" - does the song have that modern edge that would suit a young boy band"

As with all reviews you would need to "filter" the feedback to decide what you want to take on board but I think it will be a good start and will certainly save you a few quid and may even help you make a few improvements before you spend money with a pitching service

ive seen the lead sheets that taxi send out, quite extensive really.
thing is people looking for songs on there already know what they want... whatever was a hit yesterday..theyre not looking for you, theyre looking for them..

this forums a brilliant place to 'air your wares' ..
theres no agenda other than help each other get to the next song..
however you want to write it ..

i may not believe this tomorrow...

if you're looking for helpful reviews that will actually give you tips on how to fix the problems in the song instead of just downright insulting you or giving you no info

use cloudkillers

you'll get your reviews in the form of soundcloud comments

Negative comments aren't allowed there
users have to give useful information on how to make the song better instead of saying you suck or anything discouraging.

You'll find this much more helpful for that sort of thing

I'd only use musicxray for looking for placements and all of that
Honestly, I'd recommend ignoring the reviews you get there
from what I've heard and seen, they seem to be bullies and hipsters
they'll just say the song isn't what they're looking for and give you a shitty percentage that gives you no information on where to go next
useless

I had a song on there that hit number 1 on a top list site and got a terrible review from musicxray
made no sense unless they just didn't like the genre.

anyways, this link is supposed to give you some free points and luck to use on the site to start you out

http://www.cloudkillers.com/?aff=25109

this way you'll get feedback that actually helps you become a better artist

by the way, this site is FREE
