Hi all

It has been ages since I have posted any of my own stuff

Caco very kindly agreed to be a bit of a guinea pig for me and laid down some vocals for me to play with

This is the first song I have consciously written for a female artist to perform and it has taken me a while to find someone to record it for me so I am very grateful that CaCo agreed (Thank You!)

There are a few "firsts" for me in this track in both the writing and production process so it was used as a bit of an "experiment"

I did not have any specific artist or market in mind for this track - I just let it develop and grow in its own direction

I would love to know your thoughts on the song and production

Here is the track: https://soundcloud.com/boydiemusic/forgetting-last-friday

Forgetting Last Friday

Chorus
Forgetting last Friday
Forgetting those words you said to me
Forgetting last Friday
I was overwhelmed
I had to leave

I'm better on my own
Leave me the hell alone
Won't answer my telephone
Just leave me
Forgetting last Friday
Forgetting last Friday

Verse 1
Monday comes around again
Can’t stop my mind wandering to you
Even though I try my best
I’m remembering

Verse 2
Tuesday's never gonna be the same
I haven’t even thought of what I’m gonna do
Feels like this week will never end
(I) cant do anything

Climb
But as the weekend comes around...

Chorus
Forgetting last Friday
Forgetting those words you said to me
Forgetting last Friday
I was overwhelmed
I had to leave

I'm better on my own
Leave me the hell alone
Won't answer my telephone
Just leave me
Forgetting last Friday
Forgetting last Friday

Verse 3
Mid week (I) haven’t done a thing
The boss is wondering where my head has been
Don’t even know where to begin
Or where it's gonna to end

Climb
And as the weekend comes around...

Chorus
Forgetting last Friday
Forgetting those words you said to me
Forgetting last Friday
I was overwhelmed
I had to leave

I'm better on my own
Leave me the hell alone
Won't answer my telephone
Just leave me
Forgetting last Friday
Forgetting last Friday

A real Rembrandts sound here. Very 'Friends-ley' ;-)

A catchy happy-go-lucky song Boydie.

There's a dodgy chord for me popping up a couple of times. I'll listen again later to check it's not my speakers playing up.

Excellent axe wielding but that's as I would expect from you :-)

The drums are a little tight sounding. It needs some reverb/ambience putting in there.

The idea of working through the days of the week in a lyric has been used before but it works all the same. I don't suppose it would make any difference to someone hearing it for the first time and liking it.

I was expecting a more modern sounding record as I know you've been developing that side of your production techniques (synth work etc).

Still a catchy tune though.

Alan.

Nice, I wasn't quiet expecting this, CaCo vocals have a really good indie pop vibe. Boy that sounds wrong, I mean i've only heard CaCo's solo stuff which is very different.
In terms of the song it bops a long nicely.
I like the fact you go bang straight into the chorus, which is catchy.
Great sounding solo over key change.
Not so keen on tambourine rhythms though.
Reading Alan comment the only thing i wasn't too keen on was the end of the chorus at say 0.30 it a retro feel
 :) :)

Wow!  great to hear Caco singing upbeat( its great to hear her sing anything? Certainly a very talented woman & theres some very pleasant vocalic touches set within Boydies veryclinical mix.
Definately rembrandts also  reminded me a little bit of the Cures 'Friday I'm in love' Which I loved! Certainly a very well produced & catchy song & nice work on the bass & other guitars(I'm quite impressed by how much commercialism has been put to use in this song....The key changes & pop ingredients catchy chorus..& melody. Its very pleasant  & lacks on the modern mainstream sounds if thats what you are hoping/pitching for?
on the whole  a good song         R'gardz  Stylus :)

i remember this from a year or more ago with you singing it it was more rock then  .....i like this version better caco gives it a big pop feel ...the backing was very good & tight but the mix was a bit strange  the bass & kick drum had that modern sound like your hearing them thru the wall but the snare sounded  like it was from another kit & another time& actualy hurt my ears after a while & the guitars were sort of fuzzy in the background...despite all that the song worked realy well & was much catchier than i remembered it
i wasnt sure also about having caco as the caco sisters! with 2 voices panned so far apart singing together all the way thru either....but i did realy like her singing this
maybe this is some new sound your working on i dont know
i liked it a lot ....but i know you are very into production & stuff so thats why im  telling you all this & hoping you wont mind :)

Hi Boydie/Caco,

Liked that. I was getting a sort of Bangles feel - which is a good thing in my book.
The snare does seem to poke out a little bit at times. Nice solo.
Caco sounds totally different - sounds good.

Cheers,

Production sounds pro to me!!! Not the type of stuff I listen to usually but it's excellent production and vocal.
I can hear Richie sambora influences at the beginning of the solo???

I'm not qualified to comment on such a pro sounding track!

Brilliant work guys

I'd love to claim writing credits but it's all Boydie's. i just did a bit of singing (which i loved!! So cool being a bedroom popstress for an evening!)

I've already told Boydie i love the track, but I'll say it again! Soooo much fun!

That is a tasty shot of sugar!

The production is polished, the chorus is super catchy and the vocal performance is great.

But I'm afraid I do not like the wide double tracking on the vocal all the way through. It constantly feels like it's drawing attention to itself, and on the first listen, I couldn't concentrate on anything else...

I think it's a great sound if used more sparingly, as an effect, though. It sounds like it would be a natural fit on lines such as "wandering to you", and "what I'm gonna do".

And even throughout most of the song, if the double tracking were narrower and one take was considerably louder than the other, I think it would sound good.

But that's the only issue I have with this track. Great work!

P.S. Am I the only one cheesy enough to want a telephone filter on "And as the weekend comes around..."?

Hi Guys,
A very nice 'poppy' sounding song, I can hear touches of the references already mentioned in other posts. There seems to be a 'wrong' chord in there somewhere, not sure if that was on purpose ???. Great singing and loved the guitar solo.
Cheers

Thank you all sooooo much for your feedback

We are so lucky to have this forum - and it has now become an integral part of my workflow

Being able to post a "first mix" after I have been working on a track and have "tired ears" is sooo useful and the feedback is top notch as always

I have replaced the link with a new mix:

Vocals - I have centered the vocals and gone with a lead and "supporting" double (thanks TINA and TOKENANGMOH). I couldn't bring myself to cut out the doubled vocal completely as I felt it was important to the "sound" of the track - I did however raise the backing vocals for some "accent" sections

Drums - I have tamed the snare (thanks TINA) and I have given the kit a bit more life and ambience (thanks ALAN). I also sat the tambourine into the mix a bit more (thanks NEIL) but I kept the rhythms as I like the variation it adds

The "Dodgy Chord" - I do like to put the odd "clash" into my tracks and there are a few in here - I don't mean them to sound wrong (and technically I don't think they are) but the intention is to add some subtle tension and release

Confession time...

The main "new toys" I wanted to play with in this track was the new COMPING feature in SONAR X3 and MELODYNE

CaCo very sportingly played along and sent me 9 vocal takes

I then comp'd these in to a lead vocal and a double vocal - using my favourite words, phrases and syllables from each take

I then created the harmonies, and the key change section at the end, solely with MELODYNE

When you listen to the tracks in isolation you can hear a bit of the processing but both CaCo and myself were astounded at the results in the mix

Yes, I really like your tweaks. The vocal doubling sounds cool now, and it lets the vocal harmonies breathe when they come in.

And the comping is very good. I almost switched to Sonar for the Melodyne integration, but I'm just too attached to my Reaper workflow. Now you're making me think again...

And I like chords with a bit of tension. None of them jumps out as "wrong" to me.

Congrats!

This is everything coming together two great talent coming in using their own individual ways that they know on how to put a new great song together.

I have a question to ask Boydie, did you record to Becky beautiful vocals or did Becky record to what you sent her, i read she took 9 takes.
