My latest attempt at anthemic, indie, acoustic rock ;-) Message of the lyrics? A muso down on his luck, wasn't after fame and fortune but was seeking the mythical, unattainable, lost chord, redemption is there though because he's a good guy and his words can always wipe away his woman's tears.

Don't get what you pray for

I thought that my job was for life, thought it was all set in stone
Working hard for a working wage, not work my fingers to the bone

Living day after day, yeah, with a future that's told
I wasn't chasing the big time, I wasn't chasing the gold

You don't get what you pray for, no not ever in this life
You don't even get what you pay for, well the money's just too tight
But, there's everything left to play for, when the prize is in plain sight
When the words you spill, are the words that kill the pain that's in her eyes

I'm on a mission to find it, the lost chord to that song
Well, the melody can never hide it, the harmony is just too strong

I wasn't chasing the chorus line, was hoping you'd belong
'Cause tuning up was never enough, you have to sing along, sing along!

I don't get what you pray for, no not ever in this life
I don't even get what you pay for, well the money's just too tight
But, there's everything left to play for, when the prize is in plain sight
When the words you spill, are the words that kill the pain that's in her eyes

When the words you spill, are the words that kill the pain that's in her eyes

Vocals, guitar and bass by yours truly, recorded at "ScienceBASS Studios" - my home office ;-)

This is my favorite of the songs I've heard you do.  The lyric is one I can absolutely identify with.  The music is EXTREMELY "hooky" and the vocal treatment fits perfectly with both the lyric and the music.

One small nit I'll pick.

"When the words you spill, are the words that kill the pain that's in her eyes"

While the rest of the song is about "you," this is personal, this is about when "I kill the pain in her eyes."

I think you have to abandon the third person consistency in that line.

See if anyone else thinks so.  That's just how it hit me.

Glad you enjoyed the song...

Not sure I quite understand what you mean about the 3rd person thing...the line

"When the word's you spill..." That was meant to be like a note to self, reminding me, one, that even though the protagonist has no job and is on a pointless quest for that lost chords, the words he comes up with can ease the pain his woman's eyes...

Lovely guitar work, and the production is really professional, great work.

I'm just sitting here nodding along, it's a really nice track, I can't really think of any criticism.

Good job Mr Sciencebase :)

Many thanks! I did record a heavy rock guitar part for it...but my independent aural advisor suggested stripping it back to just the acoustic again but with the drums and bass, so that's what we have ;-)

Hi SB.  I'm going to be critical here:  you seem to be trying hard to write a song that fits a well worn commercial formula.  Now that's fine if you are writing for a studio or TV company or working in the brill - but i'd rather see a real personal and emotional attachment to a song.  That is what i'd buy.  This sounds too hard trying to be commercial.  Sorry.

Whatever you perceive when you listen to my songs, they're all from the heart. I don't know any formulae...barely know how to change key...
