Hi everyone.

Here are the links to my YouTube clips for my open mic:

A Place At Your table

Winter Window

Billy Wright

Technically not the best, I'm afraid - this is the first time I've done this so show some mercy  :(

Lyrics here:

A Place At Your Table - The first song I wrote here in a slightly different format from when I posted it on the forum:

I'm coming back to you in the morning,
Feeling empty, running dry
Like a wounded bird I've been falling
Free falling from the sky

I've been away from you for a long time,
Seems a lifetime, fading light
Shadows grow long in the evening,
Eyes deceiving, losing sight

So if you hear me coming
Lay a place at your table,
And pour me a drink for old times
And when I see your face
It's the face I've been seeing,
Every night and every day down the line
Down the line

All down the years when I'm drowning in my fears
I know there's a place I can hide
A calm from the storm where your welcome's always warm
There at the turning of the tide

There's a part of my mind you've been keeping
From the creeping, endless night
Too many days I've been wasting,
Instead of tasting, the sweet sunlight

So if you hear me coming
Lay a place at your table,
And pour me a drink for old times
And when I see your face
It's the face I've been seeing,
Every night and every day down the line
Down the line

The world is a cold place
But there's warmth in your memory,
Enough to keep me coming for a while
And when I kiss your face
It's the face I've been kissing,
Every night and every day down the line
Down the line
Down the line
Down the line

Winter Window - Still haven't got round to recording this properly since putting it in the WIP section:

Please don't look for me
Through your winter window
It won't be my face you see
When December winds blow

I've got to keep moving on
Won't let the grass grow
I've never stayed around too long
For a face in a fading photo

It won't be my voice you hear
In your sleeping hedgerow
Just a note in the call
Of the lonely laughing black crow

I asked you when this all began
With summer's first Swallow
Did you really need a man
Who just lives for tomorrow

My steps are quiet memories
On your frosted meadow
Made by a ghost set free
That never casts a shadow

Please don't sit & cry
This love has caused you sorrow
All that's in this world must die
Like melted summer snow

In the spring's warming light
A quiet whispered hello
Like a fingers dancing flight
On the strings of a cello

Before the winter comes again
And the leaves leave the willow
You won't remember me
Forgotten song on the radio

Please don't look for me
Through your winter window
It won't be my face you see
When December winds blow

Billy Wright 1893 - 1914 - A new song I've not posted on the forum yet in memory of my Great Uncle who died on the Somme and was never found.

Billy Wright Was a country lad
Born in 1893
In the sight of St Saviours Spire
On a cold grey January

His father was a working man
Back bent in the fields
This was the way in England's shires
For the past thousand years

Billy boy grew straight and strong
From years at the plough
He loved to walk the woods and lanes
Taken by tarmac now

Billy loved a pretty girl
Her hair was fine spun gold
They dreamed of the life they'd live
And together they'd grow old

From far away came the battle call
Posters on walls, "we need you all!"
From the longbow's sting to the cannons roar
Young men have left  for a foreign war

Billy knew of life and death
It was all around him every day
He knew of sweat and toil and pain
That's how a soldier earns his pay

But that first day on Ypres hill
Wiped his soul away
No man's will however strong
Could ever be the same

Billy Wright was a country lad
With dreams of marching home
Blood and bone, guts and gold
He was destroyed and died alone

From far away came the postman's call
His death kissed face said it all
A life unlived is like an empty hall
Where widows walk and empires fall

Billy Wright was a country lad
Born in 1893
He has no grave no marker stone
Just immortality

Wonderful performance, Alan!  :)

No need for mercy, you've done a cracking job on all three songs.
Lovely finger picking on 'Winter window', you're setting up such a wonderfully calm atmosphere with that.
I recognised 'A place at your table' right away, that 'down the liiiine' - line is still so catchy! I'm always impressed when a live performance sounds just as good as the recorded version, especially when it comes to vocals. So very well done, hats off to you!

Speaking of which... glad you found a hat, too  ;D
Should be mandatory for all future open mic acts as well. I hope we can continue the whole live performance thing for a while, always great to see the faces to the familiar forum voices, and all that in a live setting... :)

I'll be spending the next few hours days with 'A place at your table' stuck in my head then, trying to get over the fact that you're playing the bloody guitar of my dreams  :D - so jealous, loving the sound!

good stuff alan,
really enjoyed the songs..  your lyrics are always good and that velvet voice..
its a real good room for sound , nice natural reverb,
wish i had one like it, you could rent it out..

billy wrights a fine song..
coupla plces the lines seemed to trip you a little bit awkward, doesnt spoil the live session feel but
might be good to put it down proper..
its a great lyric the last lines a killer.

these 'hat' sessions are quite inspiring..blooming well done
i may not believe this tomorrow...

Nice stuff Monty.
Hats off for doing it live.
Billy Wright was my fave - I've always been fascinated by The Great War, so this song struck a chord. Nice one.
Good vocals throughout.

Cheers,

Well well well Monty, that wasn't 'arf bad  ;D

I sat down with my other half to watch this and we were particularly struck by Winter Window, that classic Montydog storytelling and the beautiful fingerpicking as well as the nice rise and fall dynamic throughout. Excellent! The other two songs were also very strong, Billy Wright was very poignant, extremely well written.

Thanks so much for recording this and helping to maintain the momentum of the open mic slot, I really think the standard on here is exceptional, tbh I'm cr*pping myself a bit for when it's my go  :-\

Excellent excellent stuff Alan, Cheers

Great set Mate.

Please send royalty payments on the use of a hat to my NZ agent.....

Your wonderfully rich voice was a distinct highlight for me. It lost absolutely nothing in the live performance, you are so lucky to have a voice like that. And the guitar play? well you just made it look so easy easy they way you finger picked Winter Window fittingly seated infront of your beautiful attained glass window.

A great performance from a gifted singer/songwriter Kudos to you. ( Karma +3 )

Allan.

Brilliant, well done!

I love: your gorgeous stained glass, your awesome hat, your beautiful guitar, your dimples  :) and..... something else.... oh yes, your songs and your performance! Such a natural...you and seriousfun both made it look so easy!

Think my fave of the songs is a place at your table.

I think your recording location was a tiny bit too echoey...a few too many hard surfaces.....but then again someone else said they thought it was just right in that respect so guess it's a matter of taste.

Thank you so much for sharing your performance!

I enjoyed listening to all three songs, liked A Place at the Table best, nothing to do with the hat. I could gladly spend an hour or so listening to you, and to pay for the privilege.

Well done Monty.
