Right. Let me put this right up front

WHEN RECORDING. .....PRODUCTION MATTERS!!!

I know, It shouldn't, the melody, feeling, the lyrics should win the day.

I SAY AGAIN. PRODUCTION MATTERS !!

I'm not saying that you can make a silk purse out of a sows ear in the mix, but the reverse IS TRUE!
 :)
The minimum requirement is get your output level right.
Signal to noise ratio is all important. It allows you to show off the dynamic range (quiet to loud) of your song.
This to my ear is probably the single most important aspect.
Don't make the listener struggle to hear the important details.

When you record a song, especially when it's only solo instrument and vocal. Listen back, as if you've never heard it before.

REMEMBER: In your imagination the London Symphony Orchestra may be backing you, but...........the rest of us are only hearing what you've recorded! :-\

Please make sure you give us the chance to hear what you hear.   ;)

I know that everyone on this forum wants to help. Lets be creative together.  ;D
