Yeah I accept your points Calum and sing

I like whos whas when they form a hook

What I can't stand is the Tourette's , club style  - 'I need your love whoa a ha ha ' type shit

filler rather than all out hook type huma-bility  ;D

Words are beautiful but when sung with emotion and a heartfelt melody it becomes art

I think ohs and aas are total cop outs - I know this first hand , I have used them to , but it's mostly when I am too lazy to work harder to get a sentence that fits

Agree completely that the voice is an instrument  ;D

I have posted this more as a discussion point not as a pop  8)

If the voice is an instrument, how can an ooh or an ahhh be a cop out?   ???

I use ooh's a lot, I like to figure out harmonies and layer them, creating what might be seen as an alternative to synths and strings I guess..

Definitely NOT a cop out..  :(

Listen to 'Grown Ocean' by Fleet Foxes, there is proof that an ooh is not a cop out..

I agree that lalala type stuff instead of a verse is just lazy though..

Haha, yep, I wrote that then saw your post as I was publishing mine, sorry Kaf.

I wanted to make my point though, ooh's are the cornerstone of most of my catalogue of work  :D :D

No worries my friend ;D

You know your reply surprises me though as I have always considered your lyrics well thought out so the oos and aas are well hidden

Maybe that the point - atmospheric , hooky yes

But I hate all those little whoops and yeahs - makes me think of Blackpool social clubs  :o

Cheers Kaf, I do spend ages on my lyrics :)

I agree about whoops and yeahs, especially on studio material, because they arent spontaneous. On a live album then maybe they are ok.

There is ONE song where this is acceptable and pivotal to the feel of the song...

Blur - 'Song 2'    WOO HOOO.....   ;D ;D

Back to topic though, I think people need to include everything they can when they post a song, the more info the better, if they just ate cornflakes, then wrote a lyric which related to those flakes, I want to know!!

Or how else will I understand that obscure line?   :D :D

Foreign members, post your lyrics, don't run away. We can translate them if we want to using Mr Google  ;D

A song is a song, all are welcome :)

Kafla, by the way i just wanted to say i do actually agree with you, generally speaking. I only thought afterwards that maybe it looks like i totally disagree, but no i just think it's all good, so long as it can be used creatively, but i do agree with you that words can be beautiful, and that the voice is a particularly unique type of musical instrument too!

IMHO its music not maths and there are no rules . never got on well with rules anyway since the day my " music teacher " at upper school declined to teach me to read bass clef transcriptions on the grounds electric bass was not a " proper " instrument. WTF I have always considered myself to be a lyricist first, composer 2nd but I think if it works use it-be it an epic missive or oohs and aahs. personally i like to read the lyrics but think it should be personal choice to post or not.  8)

If oohs and aahs were good enough for the Beatles, they're good enough for us!
