Ok. So i've released a couple of songs. But they've not gotten more than maybe 300 plays each. And that's all from facebook friends. My question to you is: How do I get my songs out there? How can I get people I don't know to listen to them?

Are they any good?

The very first thing to do is get "impartial" feedback on your songs - family and friends have a habit of not wanting to hurt feelings (which is natural)

The best thing you can do is post one of your tracks in the review forums and let people you don't know listen to it and give you some independent feedback

You can then either take this on board or ignore it but once we get to hear the tracks we can better advise on how to get more "listens"

eg the approach for folk would be different to rock, which would be different for pop etc.

It is also worth a read through JAMES NIGHTHAWK's threads about online / social networking

OK, I have just had a listen to your tracks

Are they any good?

That is definitely a big yes from me there! - I absolutely loved the tracks!

The 2 tracks I just listened to on your Facebook are quite different (eg "A Thing Called Life" being a boyband type pop song and "OMG" being a much rockier affair)

Although this shows your diversity I think it is important to establish your "persona" as an artist when trying to build a following to give your "fans" a definite and clear image

Are you an "angst ridden rocker" or a "clean cut pop star"?

If you define yourself clearly in your own mind you can start building your "persona"

You can then start looking at yourself (or your band) as a "product" and apply the normal marketing techniques

e.g. once you have a clear "product" you can look at your target market and work out how to get your music listened to by people you think will like it - who will then tell their friends etc.

e.g. a "teeny bopper" star might tour "under 18s" nights at nightclubs, whereas a heavy rock or indie band would target university/college student unions or student pubs

Many people don't like the marriage between music and marketing - but if you are looking to "make a mark" you increase your chances by being a little "marketing savvy"

I think you have made a great start!

The thing is! I'm not aiming to become and artist. When I was young I always wanted to become a rockstar. Now I'm aiming towards the songwriting thing. I want to write songs to people who can't do it themselves. I want to become like Max Martin.

I know it sounds awful. ''Write songs to artist-products like Katy Perry or Taylor Swift.'' But that's what I want to be. And I think I can make it!

Hopefully I'm will get in to this songwriting school that I really think can help me!

Thanks for putting in so much interest in my work by the way, Boydie!

Aha - I see...

This is exactly what I want to be doing as well

The same principles apply - but in reverse!

Find some specific artists/genres and write in that style

I have PM'd you a link to a book that I think will really help
