Hey all

Just a quick one...

I am currently having a full blown website built. The design is done and it is being coded.

On this site I wil be continuing to host my "blog" that some of you follow (www.jamesnighthawk.com/blog).

I am considering renaming this page. Blog is fine, but I am concerned that it sounds a bit geeky/internet-y for what it is

Basically it is a regular article I write about music, production, songwriting and such.

So, IDEAS?

Possibles, but not hugely sold on:

"ARTICLES"
Pro - does what it says on the tin.
Con - Sounds a bit like it could be articles about me, rather than one's I write.
      - Too far removed from the blog idea

"WRITINGS"
Pro - Again, covers what it is
Con - Sounds a bit ambiguos. And pretentious!

So....throw some ideas at me lovely people!

Thanks for your time JNx  8)

I have a news tab. This is for everything... new music, new videos, new gigs AND new blog posts.

So the blogs will show there. That kinda helps and hadn't crossed my mind, so thanks for the jog!  ;D

Ohh...some lovely ideas off the cuff there Mr DB!

Can't wait to see what you come up with after "musing" some more on the subject ;)

Before seeing DB's post I immediately thought of "musings"

Music Musings

James' Music Muse

Another idea is to use "insight"

I think you write with enough "authority" (and obviously have the experience and kudos of running your own studio) to warrant something like:
Insight
Music Insight
Music Industry Insight

You could also go down the "reflecting" route - ie "this blog is a reflection on current issues in the music industry"

I do think whatever you come up with needs to describe exactly what you are doing - perhaps it is worth trying to write 1 sentence that sums up what you want your blog to achieve and turn it in to a strapline

For example...

The Music Muse
A music industry insider reflects on the current issues, trends and hot topics shaping today's music and production

You will probably feel uncomfortable with something like this but I think you should really "big yourself up" - as a studio owner you ARE part of the music industry and if it is your business (and livelihood) you should be putting yourself "out there"

Journal would be my first choice

But I disagree that blog sounds geeky or inaccessible. Everyone who uses the internet knows what a blog is. I think the quality of your posts is far more important a consideration than the name you give to that section.

Great posts everyone thanks so much!!

Love the rhyme hab! Lol

@tone blog is fine and I am happy with it, this is more a concern of other's views. And yes content is king as ever!!

@boydie I have exactly that idea. I am in the process of devising a killer one line explanation of my aims with the blog and I am thinking of exactly the line your are! Whilst modesty does indeed stop me from wanting to "big myself up" too much, conversely this is my website and my blog. I feel I should sell myself a little!  ;D

Insights is cool but a little formal

Oddly "musings" is growing on me.  My only concern is it may look a little too similar to "music". Another tab (or course!). But I suppose tab order will nullify that one! :-)

Fine thinking points guys :)

I'd stick with blog, because it is a blog. It's your thoughts and ideas about anything you want to write - a blog :)
It's not geeky to call it a blog. It is "internet-y", but what do you expect - it's on the internet! By calling it something else you aren't going to somehow attract people who aren't well used to the internet anyway :)

I wouldn't call it "articles" as that gives the suggestion that they have published in some form, or at least peer-reviewed/edited. They also don't really read like an article. It reads like.....a blog!

I wouldn't call it writings, because, you are right, it does sound pretentious!

I dont think renaming it will change who looks at it really anyway. In fact, maybe people won't click on it because of that...everyone knows what a blog is...

@ramshackles

Blog does the job, but I was thinking if I could find something that was more, I don't know, open ended and less "internety" - yes net people know what a blog is, but the name itself has dated now, and with twitter and facebook with now have "microblogs", so the lazy (lets face it, most of the internet) may ignore it for the time investment.

And with twitter and FB we have less "internet" minded people using the internet. My parents didnt know what a blog was till they asked me for instance.

A name change WONT make a drastic difference but might make things a little more welcoming. It's blog for now... but....

@tone
I think you might be onto something!

"Journal"... I like it! Both initially and 24 hours later.

Will look cool on a tab...

Will look cool on tweets/FB post, "New journal entry - First gig with live band"

What do others think? It's between stick with "blog" or move to "journal" for me ...

It depends what you will be using it for

To me a "journal" conjures up the image of a "diary" so it will only contain what you have been doing - it doesn't imply that it will include interesting and insightful "articles"

This is why I have a slight problem with "blog" - it also seems to mean "online diary"

I think you have much more to offer with your articles, discussions, opinions, perhaps some "tutorials" ( ;)) etc.

Still "musings" for me - and the fact it looks and sounds like "music" is a plus point for me!!!!

Just my $0.02
