I came across "Beck - Sea Change" recently for the first time in years.

As soon as the opening track "The Golden Age" enters, I feel relaxed. Esp on good headphones. So much so, I don't risk listening to it while driving lol!!

Mellow, warm production. Lazy yet careful guitars, and a vocal that soothes. His best work methinks.

It might not be my favourite, but it is right up there!

Like to shall your chillout favs?

Hi James,

My fave chillout album is Jose Gonzalez' 'In our Nature'. The final track, 'Cycling Trivialities' is just AWESOME..  http://www.myspace.com/music/player?sid=7437716&ac=now

Chilled just thinking about it..

If you'd asked me a week ago I would probably have said Laura Marling, but I've got a new favourite chillout album. It's called The Rustle of the Stars by Richard Knox and Frederic Oberland and you can listen to the whole thing here http://soundcloud.com/therustleofthestars/sets/richard-knox-frederic-d-1/

It's really beautiful.
New EP: Straitjacket - Listen here

Good piece of music that...sounds like the noise of a 19th c mill and workshop slowed down..the twisting of metal and saws,,,

Sea Change is good if slightly odd album. I can probably think of a hundred songs that relax me, so I'll just list some of my absolute faves:

Pet Sounds has a whole host of songs that I can chill to. If I had to pick one as the ultimate 'chill out' it would be Lets Go Away for a While.

Rufus Wainwright - loads of songs again. I'd pick 'Peach Trees' as a super relaxing, melancholic, beautiful song...

Feist: 'Now At Last'. Better than the original.

Devan Sproule - Stop By Anytime

Innocence Mission: plenty to choose from: Lakes of Canada or Lake Shore Drive would be my faves...

Wilco: 'Jesus, Etc'. Awesome awesome song.

Midlake: Van Occupanther. title track of their 2nd album, which is another one that is pretty melancholic all the way through. Takes a few listens to really appreciate it, but it is such a beautiful song..

The Shins: New Slang

Well, I could go on (I guess I listen to a lot of chilling, melancholic stuff...), so I just made a playlist instead:

That's a great discovery, tone !
Loving the sound of their music already, strange but beautiful. Thinking about getting their album now...

I recently saw The Animal Kingdom perform live, (they were the supporting act of the band I originally went to see), and I'm really into their album "The Looking Away" right now, got lots of this thoughtful-yet-uplifting atmosphere and the singer has a brilliant voice, great for just leaning back to relax

Pink floyds' 'Echoes' always works for me....don't know if it's strictly 'chill out',  but I find it very comforting and relaxing.....like putting on an old pair of slippers  ;D ;D

Lol. That is the point  :D :D

It makes you mellow. Not excited  ;D I wouldn't think Ms Rock Guitar would have many laid back CD's hehee!

I didn't mean Chill out as the "genre" that electronica tried to push in the late 90s/early 00s. That was just lots of gloopy synths and filtered drum sounds. Some good tracks (At the River by Groove Armada comes to mind) and a lot of tripe.

Oddly some of the chill stuff mentioned above in this thread isnt chill to me. Funny how different people absorb different music.

Laura Marling and Pink Flyod are far too clever musical to let my mind relax when listening to them. Crowded house is too Beatles-y and therefore far too stimulating ;)

Although Wilco and the Shins are both good calls!

Massive Attack - Mezzanie is a good one.

Tuesday Night Music Club, Sheryl Crow's Debut is a great Vibes record with some really chilled playing too....

Air - Their Soundtrack to "The Virgin Suicides"...great late night with a bourbon :)

Well, it's just beautiful music. That doesnt make you want to get up and dance: That makes you want to sit down, relax and just listen :) And be swept away...
