I found this quite interesting whilst watching Channel 4's "Stand Up To Cancer" night

Chery Cole opened the show

There was a technical issue and many are claiming it was the backing track and points to her miming

However, to me it does sound like a faulty (wireless) microphone

When they fix the fault I do think she is singing live AND performing the dance routine!

What do you think?

I think I can hear some auto-tune on her vocal after the "fix" (at around 1.18) but you can also hear a good, live, vocal performance (with more Gerodie accent than normal), especially when you factor in the dance routine

Regardless of your thoughts on the song itself I think Cheryl is often criticised and this looks like she deserves a bit of praise for coping with this technical hitch so well

i realy dont know why all this money is poured into cancer research when plainly it needs to go into celeb singing lessons ..how can you take cancer seriously when cheryl is singing about it badly
....it sounds like a faulty voice to me

Colour me sceptical

The article suggests there were problems with the backing track. Now if this is true, the backing track would likely be multichannel. If it were just a stereo track, with her vocal sung live over the top, what can go wrong here beyond skipping/data corruption? If however there is the instrumental, and layered vocals on seperate tracks (kinda like a live DAW setup), a mixing issue across the tracks is possible. We may be hearing too little at first then too much after.

Also, the vocal is very dry. Which could lend credence to my theory. Perhaps the vocal is a dry studio take which can then be treated live be the venue sound techie to "Sit" in the track, and sound like a better "Fake" live performance.

Yup, I am that sceptical!

Also: To move like that and hold notes without wobbling on pitch of dynamic is quite the ask!! The girl can dance granted, but it seems very unlikely to do both on held notes.

The vocal doesn't quite tie with the mouth expressions. Some sudden stops and inflections don't seem to be represented by the face shape, but then the video is rough. I spend a lot of time watching vocalists. Proper singing often ain't pretty! This is why music videos look so odd, esp for starlets. They mime concious of odd faceshapes, so it looks wrong.

Another issue I have: Live or not, the vocal is average. It is OK pitch wise (though sharp in spots), and rough expression wise. Her JOB is singer. He job is to sing, dance and look pretty. That's it! She doesnt write, produce, manage... surely, if she has such a streamlined career role she should be a better singer than middling?

I completely agree that the original intention was to sing over a backing track, and I am certainly not ilding Cheryl up as a classic singer

However, something clearly went tits and to my ears she was forced to sing live for latter part of the routine

The vocal sounded more "natural" (Geordie accent), which is why I thought it may have been a live performance at the end, which I did actually find quite good, especially with all the dancing

I think she is more of a "product" than a singer (like spaghetti bolognaise in a tin isn't like an Italian restaurant dish) BUT if thst was live singing along with the dance routine she deserves some credit

Why are we praising her for just possibly singing live? Has music stooped so low :D

type 'la blogotheque' into youtube for hundreds of outstanding live, unamplified live performances by bands and artists that dont nearly generate as much attention or money from their music as she does from 'maybe singing to a backing track while she dances'.
