My name is Derek, Im 36 and from Lanarkshire. I have always loved music and have wanted to learn how to write songs for a long time.

Im really looking for some help and feedback as I have no real idea how to structure a song, lyrically or musically.

Any feedback, assistance much appreciated.

Hi Derek - thanks for joining us! I hope you find the forum to be a good place to get advice and criticism for your songs.

I always think the first step to learning how to write a song is to learn other people's songs. Learn lots of them, and over time you'll pick up what goes into a song musically and lyrically.

hello Derek,

it is hard to say how one starts writing a song, everybody has his or her own way to approach it

the key would be to just start at some end, and just try

Some start with writing lyrics, and look for music to match it
some start with chords or a melody, and struggle to write lyrics etc.
some start with drums

do you play an instrument, or write lyrics?
