Another tip I learned from Clay Drayton when I took the songwriting seminar with him was this...

The more you do something, the better you get at it. So, every time you see a phrase, or a sign -- put a melody to it. It could be traffic signs, common phrases or headlines. Doing this will sharpen your melody writing skills!

I do make notes of interesting phrases in my "hook book" but never really considered putting a melody to them at that early stage

However, sometimes I have and they usually turn in to the strongest songs!

That's great! You should keep some recordings of the melody ideas in your book. You can label them so you can easily reference where they are in your hook book, so you'll know where to find them on your computer when the time comes
