Hi everyone, this is one I wrote ages ago when I lived on a narrowboat, I'd like to know if you think its any good and worth developing further, I'm on the verge of shelving it. Suggestions welcomed :)

Wake up, the children
The suns up, and rising
Breakfast, is ready
The load sits, bow heavy

Smoke clouds, in your eyes
Feet and fingers like ice
Toll house, for lock flight
Almost in sight

Tiller man
Do what you can
You're always in a rush
To earn yourself a crust

Born in, a cabin
Your life's been, all travelling
But times are, all changing
Railways, overtaking

It has the sound of the river or the chug of the narrow-boat about it. Maybe that's the re-verb but I think with a bit of arranging it would really work as a atmospheric piece.
I hear fiddle and perhaps a hurdy-gurdy to emphasise the "drone" of the guitar bass part. A squeeze-box part in places to keep that folksy waterman feel.
Good grief, it's a gem and with few wee folk instruments added but keeping the feel and production you have a winner.

Love it.
I have no authority or standing here, only opinions. :-)

Really good feel to this song.

I think mihkay has a point about other instruments but there's a certain charm to the stripped back way it is just now.

Nice work.

Oh yes! I love this - right up my street. I liked the vocals and it has a lovely melody. I really don't know whether it needs more instrumentation but I suspect it doesn't. When the song is as beautiful this I think it can stand up well with the most basic of recorded parts. I think it could do with maybe being a little longer but other than that, it's just lovely. Thanks for sharing  :)

I just relaxed, closed my eyes and let this wash over me. It was just great - so relaxing - great mood and such a lovely listen. I would leave it just as it is. Love it. BTB
not really good at anything - but as long as I am breathing I will keep on trying

Great job!  Song really puts you in a relaxing mood.  I was wondering how it would sound if on the verses you didn't put those pauses in between each complete thought.  Like "wake up (pause) the children"... maybe hang back a bit and say it all together or stretch it out.  Might flow a little better just a suggestion.  Listened to some of your other stuff and enjoyed it.  I hope to hear more.
