 Trying to remember if Massachusettes or Days of Pearly Spencer was the first 45 I ever bought. The Bee Gees were a very early influence for me, so thanks for the link.....never heard this before, very interesting observations on songwriting, from one of the greats.....

Very interesting.

So true, songs do fly at you through melodies, rhythms and words you hear.  To the trained ear, every once so often it all falls into place and, BANG!, you start composing a song!
