I need to have some photos done, ie on something other than a mobile phone lol  :-\ But photographers charge a fortune! And the work I've seen of local photographers is nasty, lots of soft focus and daft poses. Does anyone know - Is there anywhere I can go where I might find a photographer who would be willing to do some promotional photos for my upcoming gig posters?

Thank you
Jessie

Hi Jessie

I know the feeling. Tone and I had a few promotional photos taking from one of said photographers. The results were heinous! He put us in the most horrible cheesy pose ever and we looked like the worst couple of idiots!! haha!!!

So this isn't easy I know!! You could try this link: http://www.bestphotographers.co.uk/in/bristol/ my suggestion would be to contact the photographers listed and chat to them about who you are and what you're doing. You could ask them if they could take some photos for you at a reduced rate as you will give them a big mention on your flyers/posters. That way they get free advertising.

Hope this is of help. Good luck
Cathy

Do you live near an art college?  Why not approach your local photography students and ask them to do some discount or pro-bono work for them?  You could offer to send other musicians their way, or just take them out for a night on the beer afterwards.  You know what these students are like :p  Offer them lifetime free entry to your gigs, or give them a copy of your CD, all of the above.  You never know what talent you may find among the student population.  Plus they'll have access to top equipment, so the quality's likely to be good.
Another thing you could try is inviting the local press to one of your gigs.  I used to work for my local rag, and they always needed bits and bobs to fill up the ents pages.  If a photographer comes along, you'll be able to buy copies of the photos from them afterwards.  You may need to check the legality of using these pics in promotional or other publicly available media though.

most towns have a photography club/ society too - you could approach them? I used to belong to mine and they were very friendly and helpful

If you do end up paying top whack (full price) for your photos, I highly recommend asking the photographer if you can view their portfolio first, and also ask them if they have any ideas about what they imagine your finished photos will look like.
I speak from having failed to do this, and ended up with some heinous images of myself that make me feel ill haha
You have been warned! ;)
