I know this sounds nerdy, but UAD are doing a great deal on a couple of early compressors, in fact the predecessors to the famous 1176 FET compressor used by everyone, the 175B was a tube compressor, (there's also an 176) and sounds very different to the 1176, so for $39 on pluginfox it's a good deal, but more importantly it sounds very effective, a bit like an STA or a LA2A with more bite, I've played with it yesterday and it does sound very good especially on Lead Vocals. For 15 quid each it's a bargain, they are usually $200 (and they don't go on sale often) One well known producer sticks an Neve 1073 mic pre (Arturia does a good one) then the 175B then a 1176 (Plugin Alliance Purple MC77 is a great one to use) on a vocal track, a little at each stage...super smooth, you shouldn't obviously hear what they are doing, but in the mix it completely changes the way the LVox sits.
