Yes I think I hear a bit of Ronson soul here! Not 100% sure about the synth and brass sounds but as you say you could work forever on this or move on to other ideas. The vocal reverb/delay sounds great in the mix - but a bit too much at the start when it's more naked...
Good luck with the course - I reckon you've a lot to give as well as to pick up.

I dig that rumbling bass and the super clarity and presence on your vocals,all that's before we get to the song itself. I've no idea who the Ronson chap is,but the sound is good.
