I found a song I wrote last year and found I remembered the tune too (no mean feat for me). It's a definite boy band vibe (think of Westlife but without them karaokeing other people's songs - ooh the cynicism!)  :P

I've had it in my head for the last few weeks so I thought I'd tweak it a little (by adding the pre-chorus-slash-post-verse lines mostly).

WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?

So, what is it all about?
I've never been so frustrated
This time it's too complicated
To figure it all out
I'm drowning in a sea of doubt
And nothing makes sense to my heart
The two of us drifting apart
As time runs out
Just what is it all about?

I'll never forget the way you looked into my eyes
And said "This thing will last forever and a day"
I must have misunderstood: I didn't catch the lie
But then I never really got you anyway

We’re night and day

So, what is it all about?
I've never been so frustrated
This time it's too complicated
To figure it all out
I'm drowning in a sea of doubt
And nothing makes sense to my heart
The two of us drifting apart
As time runs out
Just what is it all about?

If life was a fairy tale, then this would never end
And we would live happily-ever-after too
You didn't stick to the plan and so, now, night descends
I see the clouds that gather round and hide the moon

We fell too soon

So, what is it all about?
I've never been so frustrated
This time it's too complicated
To figure it all out
I'm drowning in a sea of doubt
And nothing makes sense to my heart
The two of us drifting apart
As time runs out
Just what is it all about?

INSTRUMENTAL

The sands run out…

What is it all about?
I can't believe it's over
We held a four-leaf clover
And made a solemn vow...

So, what is it all about?
I've never been so frustrated
This time it's too complicated
To figure it all out
I'm drowning in a sea of doubt
And nothing makes sense to my heart
The two of us drifting apart
As time runs out
Just what is it all about?

What is all about?

I think that the lines need a little bit of rearrangement, they are too all over the place. The way it is written makes me think that it was a close experience (correct me if I'm wrong). The main hookup line 'what is it all about' didn't really make sense to me, u r describing what u r feeling and not feeling, and after that saying the hookup lines doesn't really make sense. The hookup line could be used for a song where eg. U don't know what to expect from a relationship, or after a bad breakup u r asking what is the big deal about love or relations, it just doesn't fit here. But the song does have a lot of potential.

The lines are fine as they are. You may be misreading the "melody". Storywise - it's in order.

It's a song about unreciprocated love. The singer is in love but is coming to realise that the relationship is toxic and not actually going where they thought/hoped/dreamed it was going. Inside, they've known this for a long time but have been too afraid to admit it.
