Hi forum friends
This is 'Dutch Dictionary', the first track I've got down from my Hanover Reading List project (see the 'Constraints' thread in the Bar if you're interested in what that's about).
This one is about being pretentious, a sin of which I've certainly been guilty.
Grateful for any feedback as ever; I struggled with the mix a bit this time so would be good to know if that works OK.
Here's to '22...
Pauly

Lyrics:

You've always had an intellectual bent
I love you for it though it's largely a pretence.
We drink from coffee cups of Penguin first editions
We haven't read, we just think they look good in the kitchen.
I'd like to watch some rubbish on TV
You've made us plans at the Royal Academy
I tried to suggest we could just be ourselves
Now here I am apologising to you and all your bookshelves

But I might as well be quoting from your Dutch Dictionary for all the sense I'm making to you
You just roll your eyes and mutter Hail Marys, like your Dutch Dictionary I'm just not getting through

I just wanted you to be aware
When you've got the graces you don't need the airs
Now here I am explaining that I didn't mean to say that
That particular rabbit was happy in the hat

I might as we be quoting from your Dutch Dictionary... etc
It's all too beautiful.

Interesting stuff @PaulyX I read your other thread with interest and it's certainly a different approach that may take you where you don't expect. You really are a master at knocking out these indie inspired classics. Your lyrics are always well thought out and thought provoking. Loved the guitar riffs and whole vibe. Glad to see you back and looking forward to hearing some more of your bookshop output   :)

Hola @PaulyX

I think it's one of the best lyrics I've read lately, I've liked it a lot.
You ask about the mix ... Sounds good to me, although since I really like the bass, I would give it a little more volume, thus giving the set more weight. Well, it's my appreciation through my headphones.
Very good one.

Stay well

good production, sounds so effortless.

Well done Paul!
It's either this or that, then again it might be the other.

I like the overall feel of this, and I like the vocals and lyrics. For me the drums (snare in particular) are too loud - take the drums back a bit and the rest of the track will shine through more as it's great. Very enjoyable. :)

Hi Pauly,

Mate I really enjoyed this track! The chorus is very singable/catchy and I love how “dutch dictionary” sings….which is weird, cos, for me, usually words with “tch” in them don’t sound great.

Loved the lyrics…”that particular rabbit was happy in the hat” is a really excellent line.

Production/arrangement wise…I loved the chord progression and all the extra vocals you had going on, guitars sounded great….mix sounded a little “tinny” on my phone speaker, but much better on my apple pods.👍🏻 I thought the whole thing sounded fab mate.😄🎶👊🏻🎶

@PaulyX a Georgeous musical intro and a fine song that follows. So well written with a great lyrical story.

As tbe song neats its end, I can conform, I love it !

Hey Pauly.

I really dig the 60s vibe going on in this one.

It reminds me of bands like the Kinks and Searchers, love the jangly guitars.

Actually, speaking of the Kinks, you have the same quirky observational qualities in your songs as the venerable Mr.Davies.
