Hi, sisters and brothers in arms!

I've been relatively less productive lately
health issues, nothing too serious yet.

quite a simple production really
time to move on, lots to do.

Feedback would be very welcome.
I hope you enjoy it.

Lyrics:

rest in peace

rest now, rest in peace
the sun goes down most gracefully
lo' and behold, you know your place
now in time and here in space
there is no future, the past has closed on us
with a resounding echo from this empty cup

rest now, oh rest in peace
out of time, I'll just say goodnight
rest in peace

caught in context the clocks will unwind
all expectations are left behind
loved and caressed through your misspent youth
until no longer fit for ornament or use
down this one way street you ran your game
win or lose, y'know, it all ends the same

rest now, oh rest in peace
all out of time, I'll just say goodnight
rest in peace

rest in peace

Love this!

Love the Soundcloud photo too…My childhood hero was Stan Ogden…Bernard Youens was, I think, the name he used when playing Stan. He went by a variety of pseudonyms. If I remember rightly (!) he ran the Peoples Theatre in Newcastle for a while and was a very interesting chap.

The episode where he died and Hilda got the plastic bag containing his possessions back from the hospital and put it on the table, then started to cry as the credits rolled was something I remember vividly.

When I saw the title, I initially thought that the songwriter forum uk had officially kicked the bucket and you were lamenting it’s sad demise…so I was relieved to see these great lyrics instead.

The music is brilliant with a delicious melancholy to it.

Fabulous.

@rightly Musically this is what I've come to expect from you. This is a strange song with a dark theme I feel, but I like it as I like all your work. Excellent. :)

Hi Rightly,

I always look foreword to listening to your creations, because they are always so interesting and unusual,
which is a real talent  8) I love your lyrics and melody and how you've put them to the more simplified backing track.
I'm also relieved that this song has nothing to do with the forum or a loved one  :-*
Keep them coming  :)

lol.

I have been contemplating death quite a bit lately.
(this isn't so unusual for me, it's very much part of living)

I've family that have been close to dying during this year.
(this is unpleasantly unusual)

It's a strange simple song
I'm really, or seem to be more invested in other songs I've got on the go these days. Leaps n' bounds! Difficult to get my ideas realised.
It's either this or that, then again it might be the other.

I can promise you a future of slow decline.

Hey Rightly, great work. Exceptional lyrics - especially the empty cup line. I like the tumbling keys in the background (I guess it is keyboard). Your voice - you seem to ‘emote’ a bit more than usual on this one... more vocal expressions between the words... that works well. It sounds like you were really ‘into it’ when singing this one.
It's all too beautiful.

This has a soothing feel to it.. fitting I guess. I expected the sound to be darker but I really like the (sort of) lightness to it.. I guess it's not really - it's just the contrast to my expectations..

Some great lines in there..  this my favourite, but it could as easily been 3 or 4 others:

loved and caressed through your misspent youth
until no longer fit for ornament or use

Nice one @rightly !

this one, despite its simplicity
is a really strange song for me

it's not unusual for me to contemplate death
there seems to be a lot of it about these days

I've got to learn how to mic up my guitar properly
I think what I did really works here but that was just luck
I need to get a clean sound, at the very least as an option

@PaulyX

I'm not sure the falling piano notes are differently eq'ed than the higher piano notes, if I remember correctly
such a fast write
I like the line too but my fave is the line "ornament or use"  I vaguely remember older folks saying it in my youth. (not in reference to myself. lol)

I'm working on a life affirming, well two, life affirming songs at the moment. they really work well with this song. Y'know it's all about the contrasts.

thanks for your attention!

Enigmatic, dark, melancholy, yet with little hints of expectation for something brighter. Another good one.
