This is June's song from the forthcoming album Musicalmanac by Mirrie Dancer (featuring Josie Black on vocals). I originally wrote it for release on summer solstice this year, which was supposed to coincide with the end of lockdown in England (it didn't!). I am lucky to live in the far North of Scotland where we have very long days in summer and, for some reason after months of being told what not to do and where not to go, the urge to climb Britain's most Northerly mountain - aptly named Ben Hope - and play my guitar at the top (Bon Jovi style!) in the nearly midnight sun proved irresistible. It's an unusually optimistic song for me.
Too long has past since we last walked in the sunshine
And felt the sweet caress of warmth on our face,
We took for granted all those innocent fun times -
A smile or a loving embrace.
But while the Earth spins on its axis
And while the planets know their place in the sky,
And while a full moon wanes and waxes,
The universal laws of physics apply.
We’re moving out of the darkness
And into the light,
To an endless daytime
From an endless night.
There’s been heartache and sorrow
But without second sight
I can see that tomorrow
The future looks bright.
Too long has past since we last walked in the garden
And felt the cool grass or the rain on our face,
We took for granted nature while our hearts hardened
Squandered things we can’t replace.
But while the world turns in its orbit
And while we’re powered by the warmth of the sun,
Those still in darkness can be sure it
Won’t be too long before new hope is begun.
We’re moving out of the darkness
And into the light,
To an endless daytime
From an endless night.
There’s been heartache and sorrow
But without second sight
I can see that tomorrow
The future looks bright.
