Just been dancing to my latest ideas, came up with some melody lines for bass and brass but how to capture them quickly….

How yo you do it?

For me CPM, when I come up with chords or a riff or summat, I use photobooth on my Mac to record a mini video of me playing them, so I can remember both what it sounds like AND how the heck to play it. Lyrics ideas go into a little black notebook or my phone memo page if the notebook is not to hand. Look forward to hearing those bass and brass lines of yours when they are ready.
It's all too beautiful.

Hi Rich,

I usually play brass on guitar first as a lead line and then convert it, bass I just play the song, run through ideas and then record a section when I like it.  I might then mute that and try a variation on another track and see what works best.

Most of my ideas are recorded into Voice Memos on the iPhone, but as PaulyX said, I then have to work out what I did when I get back to it.  Video might be the answer!

@cowparsleyman, I also rely on my phone - writing down lyric ideas in my OneNote “Hook Book” and recording audio of melody ideas

I hadn’t really considered video before, but I have also been in the situation where I have recorded some weird chords whilst noodling on the guitar and then wondered what the hell I played - so recording video is a great shout @PaulyX

@boydie @PeteS @PaulyX

Thanks for all the responses, I do a bit of all of these, video…especially for piano ideas, there’s a neat cassette emulation app called recorder for an iphone which like as it reminds me of those days when i had to record using my sisters knackered cassette recorder, but the record button was knackered so i had to jam a matchstick in the gap between it and the play button ( those two had to be pushed down together)

WhatsApp is a great tool for collabs.

Writing out the notes is sometimes the best way..

@Boydie's suggestion of OneNote is a good one.  I like the app, used it a lot for work, but for lyrics we have a shared Evernote folder.  Neil can draft, I can edit and then go back and forth until we are happy.
