I wrote this song time ago (almost seems dated)
never got to know the source of the inspiration
she got away.

I'd be thrilled with feedback, even straight talkin'

Very easy write at the time

Lyrics:

The Brighter Side Of Living

I have never seen
anyone more deserving
I’ve never felt more
 inclined to be forgiving
If you don’t have the time
then please take mine
to the brighter side of living

you seem to vanish just
as fast as you appear
and in this vacuum I
can neither see nor hear
now left behind
 you pay me no mind
and this is most unfair my dear

the night draws in, a heavy curtain
 of history and doubt
I cannot sing oh, so what the hell?
this is how, this is how

don’t leave me stranded
a masterpiece unwritten
 understand I'm one whole
mess of division
and you are too kind
to say it’s alright
 when we both know
 it really isn’t

the lives I’ve dreamt as a tapestry
of misery unfolds
so to hell with mine, look now for
there she goes, there she goes
to the brighter side alone

the brighter side of living

What an extraordinary song!! I mean that in a positive way. I really like it because it's like nothing I've heard before. You have a way of taking the brass sounds in and out of key in an almost mischievous manor while the kit is very jazzy. Great words too. There's nothing I can fault here. It's kinda over my head in a way, but I think it's great. :)

Hey @rightly - very unique and creative as usual from you.
I love the near rhymes - indecision/unwritten - how does that work!
but it does..
the trippy jazz backing just adds to the mood.
Good as it gets :D

This is such a quirky little number. It's almost like freeform jazz - I love the little jazz band in the background who seem to get increasingly crazy as the song develops. You're almost crooning here @rightly I love how the song jumps about from here to there and how you take it up and down, some lovely dark piano. Totally unique and off the wall. Sounds like something that Zappa or Beefheart might have come up with  :)

I love this little jazzy, swing, custom genre you've created here Rightly :) Everything seems slightly off, but at the same time right on  8) Love the horns.
Your lyrics are as clever as ever and flow seemliness :)
You have such a unique sound and I'd recognize your songs anywhere, and that's a compliment  8) Keep them coming

(I posted this reply a couple of days ago, but when I hit enter, my laptop froze!)

This has a wonderfully chaotic ebb and flow, almost mesmerizing backing instrumentation that is weirdly catchy. Great lyrics and I love the way the mood slightly darkens in both the music and lyrics, towards the end as she escapes.

There is only one Rightly ! (And rightly so)

Fab lyrics! And as usual your unusual and unique style and delivery! Delicious:-)!!

Love the quirky little non-singing vocal additions (I’m sure there’s a better way to describe that!!).

Love everything about this!

More uniquely creative work from you. The vocal delivery you use is perfectly suited to the slightly crazy, out of kilter feel of this song. The brass arrangement is superb and the listener never knows where the song is going next. I think this is your most accomplished piece of production/arrangement so far. Great stuff.

I like the carefree style that surrounds the brilliance of the words, an atypical style in you but well managed, in short, it's a very interesting track.
Before listening to it I have read the lyrics and it seemed very good, full of lines full of depth and abstract scenes, this one, among others, just as good.

"the night draws in, a heavy curtain
 of history and doubt"

@kevysc

yes this darkening
A lot of this wasn't intentional
but then I thought I'd leave it in
A joy to work on this one.
I put it away for a while thought I'd get some distance and new ideas would present themselves
nothing came, nd I just moved on

hanks for commenting!

@rightly - Dear Ex Frog... As always this is about as far away from the railroad of MOR as you could get, it's clean and unruley. Your songs never enter my ears without a fight e I always question myself about your work, but I like that. You are the Picasso of this forum...

As @kevysc says totally Rightly.

Another unique piece.I wouldn't know where to start to create something like this, some great ideas linked with your trademark lyrical style. Always entertaining.

Well I wrote it first on guitar
then
on piano

i can only be playful with horns
because they're full of surprises
the singing is malleable, the persona comes from the resulting track.

I'm surprised how easy this one was
others, simpler songs
will get horribly , and occasionally chew me up and spit me out.
It's either this or that, then again it might be the other.

A fascinating song and arrangement, breaking all the rules. Very original and endearing.
