Happy endings
Vintage54:
Happy endings
On death row they get fan mail
And the devil has his friends
And the carriage has the coupling of the train
She's walking home alone
Going home to nothing
And the monthly rent is overdue again
She turns to the tv for some company
But she finds out that the company is bad
So she takes an early night
Pulls the blankets round her tight
If you've got a hand to hold then just be glad
Frankie found Johnny in the movie
But real life doesn't always work that way
Lost hearts don't always find each other
If you want a happy ending turn away
Someone died from the cold today
With a pocketful of dreams
Never realized them in his time
Not for want of trying
But those dreams were hard to catch
However many times he cast a line
And he wound up on the street with next to nothing
A picture of himself was all he had
This world is full of people
But when he died he was alone
If you've got a hand to hold then just be glad
Frankie found Johnny in the movie
But real life doesn't always work that way
Lost hearts don't always find each other
If you want a happy ending turn away
The curtains they were closed
Her pain was not exposed
Pills were on the bed and on the floor
When the life inside her stalled
She was fifteen long days cold
Before a living soul walked through the door
A neighbour said i knew she wasn't happy
But i didn't know that things had got so bad
And they gave her a few lines
To fill the Local Times
If you've got a hand to hold then just be glad.

First of all -- long time no see. Good to hear from you again.
Secondly, MAN THIS IS POWERFUL STUFF. I loved this. I kept thinking this was like "American Pie" where each stanza was about someone famous. . . but I never found any parallels to indicate it was so.
Anyway. Excellent poem that can stand on it's own merits. And it's an excellent lyric.

@Vintage54,
Painting powerful and vivid pictures
With just the last line giving a glint of hope
I could hear this as a rap!
:-)
rightly:
yes I enjoyed this
was struggling to find
a melody, but that's probably down to me
quite vivid images here
it's been a while since I've been able to get away with this sort of thing.
Any chance of hearing the song?

Hey Vintage,
Good to see you again... The world seem a bleaker place and your lyrics capture this very evocatively...
