Hi.
I wrote this years ago.
Tried to play it live on acoustic in 3/4 time and failed.
Then In my usual 4/4 I got some appreciation for it but soon
dropped it from the set list. I love the song
so I gave it the cubase treatment
and got this. I hope you like it

And give feedback.  :D

Lyrics:

We’re merely dreaming

life is cruel, love is untrue
but we’re merely dreaming
I’m a fool for loving you
but we’re merely dreaming

why give in and grieve
when life is just make believe?

Hopes will fade n’ hearts will break
but if y’ should wake up screaming
do you remember when you wake
that we’re merely dreaming

Why give in and grieve
when life is just make believe?

days will fly and youth will pass
but we’re merely dreaming
Tears run dry and nothing lasts
but we’re merely dreaming

I know a brighter day
will soon be on the way

you’ve seen more than you can take
but if y’ should wake up screaming
do you remember when you wake
that we’re merely dreaming

I know a brighter day
Is just a dream away

do remember when you wake
that we’re merely dreaming

all the best, rightly.
It's either this or that, then again it might be the other.

I can promise you a future of slow decline.

Don't eat the yellow snow

And there you have it.

Wonderfully enigmatic and quirky with quite an old fashioned feel to the melody. I can imagine this being covered by a crooner in a smoky 1950s late night bar. Always love your approach and delivery of your songs @rightly

I love the concept of this song... waking from a dream or a nightmare and finding it's not real... Such a hopeful song which at same time sounds a bit bleak - a great contrast.. I really enjoyed this - as always with your work, it grows in impact with repeated listens.. perhaps my favourite of yours so far (I may have said this before)..

A fine song @rightly

Thanks k!

@rightly - Some interesting ideas in here, +1 Karen, my favourite of yours. like the upfront mix of the Vocal, your LVox used to be way back in the mix, like the 'Huh's. Lovely chords. Dig the 8va vox parts.

Superb stuff.  I think I'd put in a vocoder on a single 'Were merely dreaming' just to trip people up.

I think they’re appropriate
Acknowledging the rhythm.
It’s all part of the dance.
I usually move to the music in both

Oh and no vocoder, no way! Lol!

Hi Rightly
Thanks for reviewing the Dreamroad, I’m a firm believer in one good turn deserves another so I thought I d better check out your work as I was not familiar with it.

Therefore regarding ‘we’re merely dreaming’ I’ve listened to it a couple of times now and I’m impressed, you have a very distinctive and original voice and vocal style and your lyrics are really well written and constructed. I also liked the production and arrangement, loved the electric piano, you obviously know your way around Cubase very well. Cheers and good luck with your live performances.

It's a good song...as PJ says, a classic old feel to the song with good hookline in the title line and the 'wake up screaming' line that precedes it.

I'm not 100% in love with the snare ...it sort of jumps out at me above evrything else but you can probably ignore that...a song I'm fiddling with at the moment I can't settle on a snare sound I like either so it might be just me!

It's a good song as I said so I can understand you loving it and sticking with it.
Take it easy.

You can check my stuff out here. Mini-album getting bigger slowly. Free download if you're poorer than me.

Hola @rightly
I think this song is really special, (all your songs too) as well as the lyrics, reality and dreams together mixed.
The backing has a style that gives to the words an atmosphere of daydreaming and heavy colored poetry.
The effect of the other voice sounds great.
You know I like very much your so unique style.

I make simply zero effort to be original or unique
If that was my aim I’d be doing something other than music.
I’d have lost heart decades ago.
My best songs haven’t been written yet.
After these two albums I’ll be free.
Two simultaneously was a mistake,
I must have been wanting to Show off.

Stay tuned.
