I have struggled finding a sound for this song for about two years but finally hit on something today I quite like. Once the album I am sitting on is out, this will probably be the basis for my next project. It's about an almost-relationship with someone who won't face the feelings they have.

Lyrics:
You won't break the habit of a lifetime
And talk to me without joking
Everything's such a laugh
You won't break your silence from the waist up
Can't catch you 'cause you're too tough
And love everyone
When you love everyone

How can I be special?
How can I take a boat somewhere with you?
How can I be wrestled
From the bleak view that's all there is of you?
Habit of a Lifetime

You won't broach our unfinished business
Living out here you witness
The world pass you by
You won't break the habit of a lifetime
And talk to me without joking
I'd like just once to see you sad

It'd tell me I'm not crazy
Tell me that you're feeling something too
Tell me that maybe
That's not all there is of you

"You won't break your silence from the waist up" - what a great line!

This is a lovely song - the gentle approach works beautifully.. lovely melody - sticky for sure.. works very well I think..

That squirt of synth is lovely over the guitar...

Works really well as is.. interested to hear what you do with it..

Hi Jack, It's great to hear from you again. Hope that you get involved in the forum more as you have some great songs. Are you chewing one of those sweet cigarettes that you used to be able to buy? This is a very sweet song with fabulous vocal delivery and a perfect simple accompaniment. Great stuff

Love this! Great song concept and theme. Humour's a great mask. Great melody too. Very cool.

Hola @jacksimmons
I really love the sound, it is sweet, soft and the highs do not hurt ... However, it is my idea, not something that makes it missing. I would put some pad or strings or.. with a darker sound to vary the timbre to some parts.
I always enjoy your songs and style.

Hey Jack, really liked the expansive, floaty reverb going on here.  Smart choice not to have any percussion for this one I think.  I also really like the treatment on the vocal at 2:37 where it suddenly sounds very distant.  It's a musical balloon drifting around in a gentle breeze... very nice & poignant.
It's all too beautiful.

A really interesting  melodic song with a great ethereal arrangement and production. I also  liked the heartfelt and well written lyrics as well.

Really like your vocal delivery Jack...a super song, love the jangly start however, the janglyness went all the way through the song, in my humble opinion an 8 bar rest from janglyness would be a good thing..perhaps on the 2nd chorus. otherwise a top end song. :) 8)

Hi Jack,

Loving the jangle and the pads - very nice. Great vocal and lovely melody carries what is a great basic idea for a song. Sounds like a summer day but hints at a darker story underneath. I liked this very much. Almost Smiths like...
