Very cool, Pete. Nails that early Jam sound...that bass could have come straight off "in the city" and funnily enough, I thought the vocals sounded very much like Bruce Foxton too. He had a great voice, did Bruce...often overlooked...but massively important part of the Jam sound.

As per my half-pissed ramblings last night, I think the drums could probably have given it a bit more clout...but that's by the by. It took Rick Buckler quite a long time to find his own way...and I know Weller was never happy with his drumming. The miserable skinny bastard :) When you listen to "Private Hell" and "Set The House Ablaze" off the "Dig The New Breed" live album...it's easy to hear just how much more The Jam were than the sum of their parts...and how great Buckler could be. We played a gig supporting him when they first formed "The Gift" which became "From The Jam" Unfortunately, I overheard him and Russell Hastings, later on, taking the piss out of our drummer after he'd asked for a photo of Rick sitting at his drum kit. He nearly died of shame when he realised I'd heard them both. Gggrrr.

Anyway, Neils lyrics are good...it's never easy to put a lyric like this together...because I suppose so much has been written in a similar vein...that's true of nearly everything, I guess, though. So it has to be well done. And this holds up really well and has been carefully crafted, I reckon.

A really solid number very much to my taste.

Thanks @PaulAds That's still a pretty cool claim to fame.  I was pleased with the bass, even my son, who's learning to play, asked me to teach it to him so thats a seal of approval  ;D

Cheers Paul!

As the others have said you`ve hit that Jam sound Pete(especially the chorus) & can hear Weller blaring that out. I`d go heavier on the drums too..the song can take it. Great work..thank you.

Thanks @5 guys named Lars.  We talked about drums generally on the call on Friday.  They get mentioned on all my songs so it's somewhere to work on.

Cheers

Pete

Really enjoyed this - that bass actually reminded me of Parquet Courts (though they inevitably are probably descended from the Jam too). Yes, a little more prominent vocal could be good - especially as there are some great lines in there (I like the names become numbers ... also lies disseminate).
Great stuff!

Thanks Adam. Parquet courts eh, haven’t heard that name for ages. Might have to go and check them out again.

Love the early 60's vibe!!
I really like the message......chip numbers/bar codes are not what I've signed up for.
I would like you, however, to be more explicit as to where this is coming from, and who is trying to usher this all in.
A good one for the times!!

Thanks @IronKnee. Always difficult to know how far to go with political lyrics.  The next one was the other half of this song so be interesting to see how that is received.

Hola @PeteS
Your song has strength, the instruments sound good, punchy, and the lyrics accompany the ensemble. Nice job. And yes, it's true, names become numbers, the same thing happens to people all over the world, and then they talk about races ...

Good direct energy.
Neat pop/punky feel to it.
In term of mix I would prefer the vocals up a tad and the bass down slightly. and maybe some backing vocals on the chorus would be cool too. Liked the solo too.

Thanks @moraamarolaloba.

That's all the attributes we were looking to create so im pleased with that.  And I'm glad the message is well received, iyt's something we believe really strongly in and will continuallyb rear it's head in our songs.

Cheers

Hi @Neil C.  There is agreement on vocals so I'll fix that!  The bass I wanted to be high on this one as it felt that sort of song, I agree it is high though, and thanks for liking the solo, never my best attribute because I've never been a soloist, never really liked long technical fast solos or generally the music they were in but short fast bursts really do get me going!

Cheers

Hi Guys,

Loved the energy and the JJ Burnell bass sound. I think the vocals need more presence and need to be further up in the mix but otherwise it's a great sounding song. Fine work and a well written tune.
