On the call last night we briefly discussed having some kind of songwriting challenge. How about this one for keeping us occupied ?

Once we have some willing participants, each entrant would be matched with a random (computer generated or probably more likely scrap of paper) musical genre and then has to write a song in that style.

Anyway, I'm totally open to how this might work but just wanted to canvas some opinion

Cheers

John

Why not? It should be something a bit opposite of what the participants normally do. Though of course you and CPM have done every genre out there by now!

@adamfarr - of course I’m game and you have a point, so I’ll pick a genre for @pompeyjazz  and he can pick one for me...

Would that Work?

(Holy moly, i might regret this idea)

Nice idea @pompeyjazz. I suppose that if I liked my prescribed genre then I would be happy, but if it was something I had no affinity with, maybe some of the fun would go. Mind I would still do it as a bit of an ability stretcher.

How about everyone getting two randomly prescribed genres A & B, a bit like choosing your category on a TV quiz show?

Well done for putting something forward that could turn out both challenging and fun.

But I will go with your idea if everyone is up for it as is  ;)
My latest novel: pls check it out!

Pity I can't really join in this as my partner would end up with my randomly generated death or thrash metal! :P

Though, seriously (and with thought to the above absurdity), if this were to work well I think each partner would have to be "thoughtful" about the genre they'd want their "partner" to adopt.

I like the idea, although, no matter what I try to do, everything I write ends up sounding pretty much folky sixties-ish. The thing is, I can't resist a songwriting challenge. I'll just have to ask someone for help....

I think I`m up for that PJ. Would be a good learning exercise. I`d have difficulties if the genres were too obscure, I`ll be a bit buggered if I get something like BlackMIDI or thrash metal cos I`ve only got an acoustic guitar & a Yamaha PSR (getting my excuses in early) ;). I like @MichaelA `s idea of having randomly prescribed genres plucked out.
Also could be fun to write the lyrics  about a randomly chosen subject.

Oh @5 guys named Lars that's a thought. If I draw anything that requires fancy stuff, electronics, or anything complicated, someone will have to help me.

It's all too beautiful.
