@shadowfax Go for it Kevin - let us know how it goes.
Then you can build a real instrument - like a piano  ;D ;D
My brother and I took an axe to one years ago - but I guess that's going in the other direction.  ;D

@shadowfax

Pups = pick ups

Low quality guitars tend to use low quality woods and hardware but if you are not looking for a cherished player then you could have a lot of fun picking up some cheapies and mix and matching components

WD Music are a great place to have a browse

There is also a website that sells "seconds" bodies and necks etc. (The name escapes me so I will try to dig out a link later) which had some bargains when I last looked

You've hit the nail on the head there Paul, I'm not looking to build an awesome guitar..just looking to have a bit of fun messing about, something extra to do during these weird times..

@Neil C - nope but I'm gutting and renovating and old farmhouse - so yeah I guess I am sometimes. BTW I liked "We've Only Just Begun" Oh wait that's another type of Carpenter :D

I'd definitely add a vote for Axesrus.  I had an old Squier Strat that I liked but wanted to improve.  So i replaced the pickups, switch and pick guard with one of his kits.  Easy I thought.  Turns out, my Squier was one of the thinner ones but Craig at Axesrus was really helpful with advice.

Sounds much better now.  Although my son has pinched it and I stick to my PRS  :D

So..A few days ago i took delivery of an (wait for it)..Oypla guitar..LOL, it was 60Quid ;D 8)..looks like a Fender strat and to my ears sounds just like the real Fender strat I sold recently..plays just as well also..nice action on it straight out of the box, I took it to bits, (something I wouldn't have dared do with the real Fender) and resprayed it a different colour..didn't want red,
so anyway, hanging on my wall now is to all intents and purposes a Fender strat..for no money at all.. :) I'm no guitar expert but to me..it's a winner.
I cannot tell the difference..crazy that you can get a good guitar for 60Quid..there's even a vid on youtube where a guitar aficionado admits that if someone printed the correct logo's on the guitar and told him it was a special edition he would have trouble disputing it...
yeah it needed setting up but so did my original Fender..seems to stay in tune also..
If I'd known this before I bought an expensive Fender (or if this guitar was available back then) I wouldn't have bought the Fender..
and yeah, I chickened out of an actual build ;D ::) :-[

Looks awesome @shadowfax

I LOVE the colour you went with

If you are feeling brave you could reshape the headstock to something unique and put your own logo on

I'd ruin it for sure..that's why I stayed away from an actual build..it was interesting taking the guitar to bits though...I always thought they were more complicated but they're quite simple really..my own logo..there's a thought..

@pompeyjazz - With my strat I decided against putting a Fender decal on, to me There was no point as it’s not a fender, and i don’t have any desire to devalue what it is, a noname keeper, a real players axe. I have no shame in playing a Squier, when I played it live I had more people come up to me after ward and ask me how i got that sound...

Each to their own with personal things like axes.

@shadowfax - great paintjob. Where do you live?

I once borrowed a strat and a flanger from a friend, the body was made of chipboard, but it played beautifully...the pedal was also one of the best danelectro hash browns superb it was.

I was also given a strat by a mate that was covered in bat poo, but that was never a player, but the stock pups were pretty good, i sprayed that black but it didn’t get any better...

The best axes I ever played for playability and sound  I now own, never to sell.

The only ones i would consider in future would be a ricky 12 string a gretsch and a Wal bass...oh yeah and some kind of Lowden acoustic.

Love to hear your new axe on a song.
