Hi,

It maybe my age but noticed I started to talk to myself out loud sometimes in my studio, say at the end of a take or mix. No idea why as there nobody to hear me, perhaps i'm giving myself some encouragement?

Just wondered whether anyone else did similar or other slightly odd habits?

I talk to myself about what I'm doing all the time. Don't remember when I started. Maybe I've always done it. It's a bad habit, because my family assumes I'm not talking to anyone when they hear my voice. Even if I AM talking to them.

Hi @Neil C , yep this resonates! I think it's so easy to do once you have your headphones on and recording a vocal track. Well you are singing to yourself aren't you?  So it is all so easy to extend this and talk to yourself- and maybe say out loud, for instance, 'that's shit Michael, sing it again!'.

Plus in lockdown, with so many less people to talk to, it can be quite comforting to have a chat with oneself. But it does sound better with a bit of reverb, delay and EQ! Otherwise it could be altogether quite dull.

Good topic!  ;)

Not only do I talk to myself all the time, I also occasionally hear voices in my head... no, not those kind! It's tinnitus related so I hear sounds all the time. Just sometimes, when I'm distracted, it will sound like an actual word or two. I've been known to talk back, convinced I did hear someone.

Oh, @Sterix , we must be related. I also hear voices. Well, it's generally just one quiet voice and it usually just says "Vicki". It doesn't happen often and it's a bit startling when I'm just falling asleep.  ??? :o

Can they hear you? Or are they listening to Bach?

Only when they take their headphones off and they prefer Offenbach..

Funnily enough, that's probably the word I most often hear (well, Martin not Vicki!).

Maybe it's a tinnitus thing, as I also have that. It drowns out a lot of quiet noises. My husband will perk up and say, "What's that noise?" And I'll say, "All I can hear is the hum in my ears."

Hey Neil.  I don't know if you're as old as me, but if you ARE, the threshhold is this.

It's okay to 'talk to yourself' at this age as long as you don't 'answer back.'

I talk to my invisible friends.
The little bastards just ignore me, but I'm not bitter about it :D
