A giant among American songwriters. One of the greatest of the 20th century, right up there with Hank Williams and Bob Dylan.
His songs, like Hank's, seemed to appear fully formed and effortless. They were poetic without anything that was overtly "poetry."
Also, was a local guy (was a mailman in just the next town over from where I now live and grew up in the same suburb as my dad), so this is almost personal. Hits especially hard.
Rest in peace, John. You will be remembered.
Here is, appropriately, the last song from his final album:

So sad to hear this today. I’ve always loved his songs. I was lucky enough to wrangle an invite to a very small show he did in the American Embassador's residence in Dublin (very fancy) where he played a few songs and then spoke about his inspiration, writing songs, playing his music for his father.... very special. And then he and his wife stuck around to chat for a while afterwards. They were both lovely.... so down to earth...

Anyways I’ve always loved this song... RIP JP...

"there's a hole in Daddy's arm where all the money goes" must be one of the best lines of all time. It's a shame it's not really my type of music but always admired his craft.
