a former local radio presenter posted about an online radio station that focuses solely on unsigned acts - XRP Radio, www.facebook.com/XRPRadio - submit a song via their site and there is a very good chance they will play it, and the listeners then vote on their favourite tracks (and can also buy downloads). Managed to get one of our songs played on there and at Number 7 on their charts.  May not be to a whole host of people who listen but always nice to reach total strangers with your music!
