I often think about what I’d wear if I was in a band as a lead singer -on a stage in front of thousands , I’d like to be female Liam Gallagher eating the microphone , mini skirt, bangles on my wrists , quite abrasive make up making a statement , high heels , maybe a Blondie punk style black leather mini - demanding attention , with real attitude , white cardie open , black t shirt with a statement on saying something like free or be yourself

That would look awesome, Katie.

I have two ideas, probably requiring a change during the show. I imagine myself in a trenchcoat and red high heel pumps, and red lipstick. Maybe a hat. Kind of a film noir femme fatale.

The other costume would be a floor length blue velvet dress with a sweetheart neckline, cut low in the back. You can see what I mean in a painting I did on my website.

You'd think I could just put the coat over the dress, but nope. That wouldn't look right.

Unfortunately I'm way too scared to do it, but I can envision it.

The difficulty for blokes is what goes with the beer stain down the front  8)

I used to gig with clarkes polyveldt chukka boots painted light blue (me dads car paint) then chequered pattern over the top, red on the left, blue on the right, very fetching, they caused more of a stir than the music.

In another band we got the backing vocalists (2 girls) to wear read 50’s dresses with big white polka dots, they loved it and so did the audience.

As artists we felt kind of together and very cool

Seriously though, stage costume is really important if you want to promote an image that you can hang your music on, even if it’s a clever understated  image such as ed sheeran, put simply his stage wear reflects his music and what his potential fans wear.

I can hear the marketing execs round the table now...
