We’re constantly bombarded with adverts for plugins that claim all sorts of features to make ones song sound professional, and it’s all too easy to fall for it every time, but which one could you not be without?

For me, it is a piano plugin when I record piano, and that is "TruePiano" :) Started using it with FL Studio, and recently I figured I could use it with Logic Pro X as well.

Interesting...for me it has to be waves CLA2a, used on more mixes (lead vocals) than any other plugin, superb, and so easy to use, unlike some of those multi knob things...

Sorry, I need to nominate three..!

My musical weapon of choice is electric guitar and no plugin I've tried can match Scuffham S Gear:

Vocals are the most important element of my songs and the Waves Scheps 73 makes a massive difference to me. I've used it on every track I've recorded for many years, and it adds... I dunno, definition, clarity, helps it sit well in the mix - it's just magic! My settings normally look something like this:

Finally, a great way to easily enhance your drums - works great on snares, kick and overheads. Dead easy to use - Waves Scheps Parallel Particles:

Also agree with the CLA - 2A. I manged to get the free Cakewalk version of this a few years ago, and I use it a lot. As you say, dead simple to get great results, which is always a good thing.

If you had to pick one which one would it be?

If I could choose only one plugin it would have to be the Waves SSL E Channel strip

Not only do I like the analogue feel it gives but it contains everything you could need for mixing (excluding effects)

It has high and low pass filters, 4 band parametric eq, compressor/limiter, gate/expander - and the modules can even be moved around with button presses just like the original consoles

It was a relatively recent discovery in my mixing journey. I don’t have a background mixing on consoles so didn’t really see the need for a channel strip that works like a console - but there is definitely something a little more “organic” using virtual knobs rather than a sexy graphics based user interface

I also find it is a good tool to force you to mix with your ears rather than your eyes

If I were to ever get around to doing the mixing tutorial videos I want to do I would spend a lot of time using this plugin as if you can master the concepts and approaches in this channel strip everything else will be a piece of cake - and even without the regular Waves offers the price is ridonkulous for what you get - it is currently on sale for $59 with a half price offer as well, making it $29.50  :o

Just go and get it!

Hi @Boydie - Great call, I bought it after your recommendation some while ago.

Would be interesting to see your video whenever you get around to it.

Have you tried any ssl channel strips from other vendors, brainworx, ssl?

@cowparsleyman - No, I haven't - I don't feel the need to change, when I find something that works I tend to stick with it
