Hi,

Here's a song about ambition that PaulyX started lyrically and then we developed into an attempt at a relatively modern - well this century - pop tune. It was good fun working together on it.

Anyway please let us know what you think about the song and suggestions.

 :)

Everything

We were stuck, we were stuck in a rut
Nothing ever happened to people like us
We knew our place, knew that sinking feeling
On our knees but still hit the glass ceiling

(But then we) Heard the news, and the news it was mental
If that could happen, all bets are cancelled
If that could happen I’m a monkey’s uncle
And the monkey says he’ll be king of the jungle

We could start our own art movement
A bit like the Vorticists with minor improvements
And a greater sense of our own importance
We could change the world, we just need an audience

We could write our own manifesto
Start a protest in the car park at Tesco
Or fill the skyline of mighty Manhattan
Just need to learn to straighten them wagons

So please don’t say it cant be done
No need to walk before we run
Its probable that everything is possible
I really do believe - in everything

You’ve got to stretch your imagination
Just like God at dawns creation
And let the genie out of the bottle
A tidal wave of the unstoppable

Was Icarus flying too close to the sun?
You’ll never know until its begun
Mao’s first step was the hardest
My Little Red Book is gonna be the largest

So please don’t say it cant be done
No need to walk before we run
Its probable that everything is possible
It really might be likely -  everything

So please don’t say it cant be done
No need to walk before we run
Its probable that everything is possible
It really might be likely - everything

So please don’t say it cant be done
No need to walk before we run
Its probable that everything is possible
I really do believe - in everything c Sands/Connor 2019

I thought that this one would be good with you two guys involved and I'm not wrong. Fabulous lyrics. My favourite line is "On our knees but still hit the glass ceiling"

The acoustic sound is really sweet - Like the way you go into the Ska offbeat.

As usual top quality playing and production and some whistling thrown in as well  :)

Oh yeah - I thought the bv's were very effective and well thought out

An absolute cracker  :)

This packs a punch. Lyrically it's quite deep. Mt favourite bits are the two verses sandwiched between the choruses - 'You've got to stretch your imagination' and 'Was Icarus'. These are very well crafted and they're provocative too.

I was surprised to see that this track was 5 mins long. It really didn't feel anywhere near that long which is a good thing I guess. Maybe it's because the track changed direction and there were new and different elements drawn in throughout that made it seem shorter. I got a kinda GNR vibe from the earlier part - but maybe that's because of the whistling (Civil War?). The outro was a good sign off initially I thought with the ad libs but then the synth came in and I gotta be honest and say I found it distracting, bordering on the annoying. It kinda gave it a dated feeling too - it was almost 80s like with this sound.

Nice track in all but if I were to place it I wouldn't say it was 'this century' pop but would call it a cheeky treat of 90s Brit (the chorus and latter parts) pop with some late 80s rock (the earlier parts).

Sweet and lush acoustic sound on this...sounds like either an open tuning or a twelve string to me. I like the vocals as well, I always think with a bit more snarl to them you could sound like Ian Dury. The whole thing is very well written and produced as always but I thought the strings were a little loud around the 4 minute mark. But then you follow it up with an absolutely cracking guitar solo...it really is the bees knees. Fab entry with very few nits from me. Great stuff.

What a super match-up.

I think it's last century for sure...and thank goodness for that :)

Music tootles along expertly with some great guitar flourishes. Is that a Les Paul? I'd maybe have gone for a thinner sound on the rhythm part...but so what  :P I'm probably wrong anyway  ;D

It absolutely didn't feel like 5 mins to me.

As I was reading the excellent lyrics...I had to laugh at the Icarus bit...as I've just written something for the spring quest partly referencing the same fable.

Great guitar outro too. Super stuff!

Lot of fun working with you on this Neil.  You deserve all the credit though - chords, melody, playing and production and half the lyrics ;-) ... your demo came back almost fully formed.  Hope we can do some more together dude.
It's all too beautiful.

Great collab guys.

Clever lyrics paints a beautiful and motivating.

I like the "Please don't say" sections, both the vocals and the instruments around the same time.

The kind of song that you play at the end of a film with a happy ending.

Like the wuhus and the whistling.

Excellent song guys

I'm a wise man, I usually judge a book by its cover. lol.
I didn't bother with this because of the naff title.

oh boy, was in for a surprise!
I was fascinated with the first line
it's a long one, the song, I'm generally hard to please...

So many good lines in there and very relatable!
Didn't I tell you to Keep the genie in the bottle?

"It's probable that anything is possible"

This one is the best I've heard in a while!
thanks for your efforts, Thanks for sharing!
an inspiration!!!
It's either this or that, then again it might be the other.

I can promise you a future of slow decline.

And there you have it.

Hi Guys,

Great collab. These lyrics alone are enough for me:

"We could write our own manifesto
Start a protest in the car park at Tesco"

I love the way this shifts musically between the different parts - a testament to Neil's skills as an arranger. It never sits on one musical idea for very long before it moves on. Some lovely melodic sections especially in the chorus. So much to like here and so much skill and care has been taken with this. Probably my favourite collab on the forum at the moment. You guys never cease to amaze me.

This is very interesting indeed - I really enjoyed the movement through the different parts. Doesn’t feel like 5 mins which is quite a feat... Great lyrics. For some reason that opening progression really grabbed me - love the spoken first lines too. As an aside, wish i could whistle - not sure if I’d use it in one of my songs but It would be nice to have the choice :-) - really works here. Lovely!

What a great lyric delivery, full of English eccentric charm.

Chorus is really catchy and quite wonderful.

The only slight nit is that bass seems to be a bit boomy when played loud through my speakers.

But I really enjoyed this, good work! :)
