So here's a silly little ditty, inspired by Martinswede competition 'rules'
I was messaging PompeyJazz and saying I was a little unsure where this was taking us, which directly led me to the title and wordplay lyrics one morning on the train, which then just cried out to be homage to the very wonderful Mr Ian Dury as you'll hear.

So look forward to what you think and hope it puts a smile on your face.

Exotica/Erotica

Idiotic and patriotic. It’s hardly probiotic
Despotic and chaotic. Caught you playing with my sprocket
Hypnotic and narcotic. I wish you wouldn’t frolic
Ironic and hydrolytic. But you shouldn’t mock it

Exotica, erotica will I pass your test?
Playing with my myself? You can be my guest
Exotica, erotica, I know it’s not my best
What this mumbo jumbo means is anybody’s guess

Vitriolic alcoholic, going like a rocket
Psychotic and mnemonic. Loose change in my pocket
Moronic, iconic would you gin and tonic?
Gastronomic and symbiotic. Its all too supersonic

I wondered what the words were. It didn’t make much sense
Got me all confused. Was I being dense?
In my defence, with eloquence. Without causing an offence
Intense or pretence? I’m just sitting on the fence

If your old fella’s feeling baggy
And the blues have got you saggy
Desist and don’t resist as you listen to tune
If your old dear’s rather naggy
And being somewhat craggy
Get underneath her bonnet and sing this little sonnet

Exotica, erotica is more really less?
Put me on the shelf if I be a pest
Exotica, erotica, can you clean this mess
What this mumbo jumbo means is anybody’s guess

Exotica, erotica will I pass your test?
Playing with my myself? You can be my guest
Exotica, erotica, I know it’s not my best
What this mumbo jumbo means is anybody’s guess

Dock it, plug and socket
I wouldn’t snog it

Iconoclastic, sticky backed plastic
Feel the elastic, Its rather drastic
Tied up with mastic, moistened with my chapstick
Thanks that fantastic

I absolutely love this Neil. A fine tribute to Mr Dury who I had the privilege to see a couple of times back in the day. I love the word craft, great nonsense rhymes which are immensely entertaining "Despotic and chaotic. Caught you playing with my sprocket" is my favourite line. I can just imagine you writing the lyrics on the train and laughing out loud. You've really nailed the sound as well  :) An absolutely fabulous entry  :)

Wordsmiths don't come much better than Mr Dury...but you've nailed his style...and lyrics don't come much better than this.

You seem to really come alive at the mic with this one...and no wonder...its an absolute smasher!

Way to go, Neil  :)

Very clever song.

Great lyrics and definitely has hints of Ian Drury. I always love repeated rhyming lyrics, makes the song more compelling.

Love the reggae fusion with your guitars.

Like the end when the boys take it away.

A great listen.

I didn't understands the rules either (and their explanations).

I always loved Ian Dury too... this has shades of Two Tone to it too though, with that ska feel to it.  And you sound a bit more academic than ID in the delivery on this one... made me think of Jonah Lewie too, remember him?
Anyway, lovely slice of fun here... playful lyrics and tail-wagging tunes.  One big smile.
It's all too beautiful.

I think this is one of my favourites of yours, Neil - you sound so at home and enjoying this style.

For me this could be a combination of Ian D and Richard Thompson.

Love the wordplay - some real left field imaginative choices there, ace stuff.

Fab lyrics on this one Neil, as everyone has said. As an ex-Cov resident I also dig the music style - a slight departure for you but you pull it off superbly. Nice guitar at the end as well...!

"I wouldn't´t snog it"  ;D

Great song Neil!

I love the intro, and all that comes after. Really extended my vocabulary.

If the general confusion round the competition keeps paying of like this, I'd say it was worth it.  :)

All the best,
Martin

I really like this, although you've just gone and used all the 'exotic' rhymes up, so there's nowhere for the rest of us to go! Cunning plan, mate! :)

The clever and intense word-play shows real word-craft and is a joy to listen to.

Smashing entertaining tune which I could listen to over and over again! :)

Yeah. I really loved this too. Going to be hard to beat. The lyrics are bonkers genius and definitely give the song massive personality. Great work.

Cheeky bugger aren't you!

Made me smile several times Neil! In fact the smile is stuck now as we go into that 'take it away boys' bit. Some inspired rhymes...some lovely sounding sets of rhymes...I especially liked sticky back plastic for some reason.

The word fest has almost made me overlook the backing track which is a great thing really....it's doing what it should in a song of this nature...just supporting...but it is nicely laid down indeed....yeah just like Dury who had a superb backing band to support his unique delivery and humour.

Well the competition peculiarities got you inspired in a good way anyway so it ain't all bad at all is it?

Great entry.
Take it easy.
