Low on Gasoline

After 52 years and my fair share of tears,
I am humbled  by the things that I have seen.
I was the second of three. 'twas my wish to be free
now the engine's running low on gasoline.

Yeah, I could put the ball in the net,
kiss  the girls then forget.
I could wait with balance and poise
amidst all of the noise
now the engine's running low on gasoline.

To the loved ones I've  lost,  I'm still  counting the cost.
Does it matter if we're good or if we're mean?
To the friends who have gone, I've been driving  along
but the engine's running low on gasoline.

Yeah, I could put the ball in the net,
kiss the girls then forget.
I could wait with balance and poise
amidst all of the noise
now the engine's running low on gasoline.
The engine's running low on gasoline.

We were standing in the doorway whilst their hands released confetti.
We raised children from our marriage 'til  the horses lost their carriage.

Yeah, I could put the ball in the net,
kiss the girls then forget.
I could wait with balance and poise
amidst all of the noise
now the engine's running low on gasoline.
The engine's running low on gasoline.
The engine's running low on gasoline.

After 52 years and my fair share of tears, I am humbled  by the things that I have seen;
running low on gasoline.

Very rare for me to comment on lyrics, as they’re not my strong suit and I don’t feel particularly qualified.

That said, very nicely written. Maybe it was the way I said them in my head, but it almost sounds like a limerick. Lovely use a rhyme whilst avoiding the obvious. I don’t quite get the “I could wait with balance and poise” line.

This would fall under the 'poem' umbrella in my view, not a defined verse chorus but a nice read.

This lyric was very visual for me. I got at ton of pictures in my head when I read it, and I felt the whole mood of it very deeply. In that sense, I think you're onto something raw and really good. That being said, I do agree with Furry61 about it being more of a poem than a song lyric as it is right now.

I could sooooooo identify with this.  Didn't sound to me like you/the singer/the protagonist was complaining, just commenting on the present reality.  Am I right about that?

Someone commented they "hoped your situation improves."  If (as I read it) your song is about getting older and not being as capable as when you were younger, it won't.  That's my situation, and maybe that's why I see it that way.

But again, I didn't get the sense that this was filled with (or about) regrets.  Interesting how things look different through different eyes isn't it?

And as I wrote that, it occurred to me that the lyric is kind of about "seeing through different eyes"  -- the eyes of yesterday, and the eyes of today.

I loved thelyric btw.  It brought a lot of feelings to the surface for me.

Someone else said it seemed like a poem, not a lyric.  I disagree.  Seems like it is begging to be sung, and would benefit from music.

@hardtwistmusic,

It's a wonderful feeling when someone really connects with a lyric/song that's you have written. I once read that John Lennon was simply commenting on his life; a view from a bird's nest on a ship. That's exactly what this is. I'm saying "hey, this is where I am now. I'm looking back to how it once was. I've been through some difficult times. I know that some people endure more difficult times than I.  Yeah, at times, it feels like I'm travelling through life, low on gasoline." Despite that, I'm optimistic and hope for wonderful things. They may never come but I'm alive and I have  chance.

I'm so pleased that you see this as much more than a poem because it is.

I sketched a guitar/vocal version and it has just slipped onto page two of finished songs.  I need to reply to one or two reviews to thank those who took time to respond to the post. Maybe in the morning when I am more awake. I felt quite awkward about this song but am immensely  proud of it.  'Low on a gasoline' has surprised me, it has connected with a number of people.

Thank you my friend.
