Greetings songwriters

I thought I'd share this with you all in case any of you Gloucestershire-rs fancy going along to a new creative writing course a friend of mine is running. The first one begins on Thursday this week 18-10-18 but others will follow. Joe's a great writer and teacher, so you'll be in good, capable hands.

This looks REALLY good and I wish I was a bit closer

I found these details about the course:

Quote
Come and explore your mind by writing. The mind that is always awake in the world. The mind that most of us forget we have.

Writing Through The Surface is a seven week course in discovery writing for anyone who wants come to the blank page and find it like clear water; not a barrier but a lens. It is not a course that teaches form. It is a course in discovering content.

The aim of the course is to create a facility for discovery writing that is yours to take away; an artistic tool and an aid to living.

I know "writer's block" and the issues of staring at a blank page often comes up around here so this looks really interesting

I agree - I'd be there too if it was nearer. In fact, it inspired me to consider a creative writing group in my town to try and kickstart my stalled creative life.

Will be interesting to see if anyone from the forum gives it a try. If you do, and you're reading this, let me know!

I hope that you do consider the creative writing group to kickstart your writing once again.  I'm sure there are many fine, new songs waiting to be written.

Several years ago I attended a writing workshop at Newcastle College in the Northeast of England. I wrote something at speed which was very well received but that's not how I like to write and so, I immediately discarded it. I find it difficult to connect with and write about my emotions in such circumstances and that is where my best work comes from. However It was good to be present and I'd enjoy being a fly on the wall watching others create at similar workshops.  I think that I can only produce my best work when, I am alone. I know that @Neil C has attended several workshops with the very talented Boo Hewerdine. I'd attend a Roddy Frame workshop if he ever decided to go down that route. For me, It would be a listening experience and perhaps, I would then try out suggestions at a later time when I was alone.  I think that a forum workshop would be similar. I'd turn up to socialise and enjoy the experience of being around creative people, maybe throw in a suggestion or two and simply observe. I've been fortunate not to experience writer's block since I was about 18 years old. However, finding  time to write is my Achilles heel!

Once again tone, I think that you should go for the writing group idea.  I'm sure one or two forum members would drop by to enjoy the experience!

Tone,

Go for it, any approach and resource are valid if it gets your creative juices flowing or as he says 'the problem may well be that you are living too close to your critical voice, and too far from your well springs'

Attending the songwriting workshops gave me some tools, safe space, dedicated time, motivation, a supportive fun environment, and a real sense of well being - I know a bit soft for me.

Have fun
