Life Is A Fleeting Thing

We're born into this life
We get old, and then we die
And there's hardly any time between
We learn to sing a song
Then it's over, and we're gone
Life is such a fleeting thing

From one to ninety-two
All the candles we go through!
Thinking treasure's buried in the cake

By the time of our demise
We've got pennies in our eyes
Life is such a fleeting thing

How will the world remember you?
The things you say?
The things you do?
Will you be kind?
Will you be cruel?
It's up to you
It's up to you

We're born into this life
We get old, and then we die
Life is such a fleeting
I think it bears repeating
Life is such a fleeting thing.

Paul,
Lots to like about this. You have this old school tunesmithness off pat.
Great chord changes. Lyrics and vocals and arrangement all spot on.
It sounds like a lost standard

This set of lines particularly resonated with me.  It triggered a thought/memory from a quote that you might be able to use in this context.

The paraphrased quote (from whom I do not know) goes something like this.

"When you die, people don't remember what you did, what you said, or what you achieved.  They remember how you made them feel."     I think the key is to live your life in such a way that you will be MISSED.  We get so wrapped up in living our lives to be "admired" that we forget about living them so that we will be missed when we are gone.

I always enjoy your songs Paul! Lovely melodies on this one as usual, particularly the verses. Nice lyrics too. Only thing that caught my ear a bit was that the lead guitar seemed a little loud in the solo too my ears. I’m happy to be wrong though and it’s only a small thing. :D

Great stuff man!

Yo Randy Paul.  :)

Beautiful work,young man.

Compulsive listening, quality and a voice crying in the wilderness of trashy business led music.

Deserves many a listen.

That soundcloud pic is gopping tho... :P   :D

It's a morbid little ditty. The music is so bright and happy, as is your singing, but boy, the pennies in your eyes imagery is pretty frightening. Haha. I don't think it's too preachy. It's memorable and fun, but also makes you think. Good one.

Hi Paul,

I can hear this as the last song in a professional Broadway musical of someone's life - I guess that's high praise. I'm not a fan of this genre but your sheer skill and musicality carries it through. I'm not keen on the spoken parts but otherwise it's well judged in both lyric, delivery and production.

M

PS. All that matters in life is having the best time you can for as long as you can without hurting anyone on the way. I don't care how I'm remembered - I won't be around to find out!

Hey Paulski
the sentiment is really nicely expressed, and the exaltation to be/do good is very gentle and effective.

I think if it were a Disney song, there would be some kind of pay-off - "so while we're around we'll support each other, spread the love" etc. (and if you were wanting to pitch the song then maybe you could even think about adding some such!)

But I prefer it this way, not sugar-coating our predicament, and effectively leaving it up to the listener how they want to react.

Paul. Late to the party I'm afraid.  What a lovely song. Nailed down message wrapped up in a perfect musical envelope. Super
