The Day Begins
I'm sitting at the side of the road
having my first smoke of the day
the dust from the horses hooves
makes me cough and blinds my eyes
everybody's so busy going about their day
I see mothers hurrying their kids to school
and men returning from the mines exhausted
A young girl with a teddy bear in one hand
and her mother's in another stops and stares at me
I don't know where to look , so I just smile
then shes gone making tracks up the dusty road
she looks back once at me
I finish my smoke and toss it in the road
pull myself up and dust myself down
pick up my hat and look about town
I tip my hat to a lady , she smiles
the noise of a wagon disapears
as it pulls out or town , probably from the bank
doing the gold run
I smile contented when I hear the sound
of a songbird in the brief silence
the day begins
the day begins
