    • Sixth Beatle - a music themed novel by Michael A (not much about The Beatles!)

Here's something I've written in a completely different style to things of late. Not quite sure what to make of it tbh. Bit retro - but that's my age! :) But I do like trying out different style challenges now and again... so thought I'd run with it for now.

Lyrics:

Pink Flamingo Cabriolet

When our Nan died, well of course we cried
But that day she saw when she talked before
She said don’t put me in a sad black car
Make it fabulous, like a movie star
On my last drive, my final mile
Remind the world that your nan had style
With a cheeky smile and a wicked wink
She said when I go, make sure I go in
Pink

In a pink flamingo cabriolet
In a pink flamingo cabriolet
Hey

She said have a ball now at my wake
Smear pink icing on a big fat cake
Play Elvis, Motown, c’mon Chuck Berry
Bit of Northern Soul and all get merry
Remember the good times we all had
As I watched you grow, now I can’t be sad
Life’s bitter sweet, that’s what I think
But when I go, make sure I go in  / Pink

So we got that car for our Nan the star
In her final mile, yeah the girl had style
And neighbours clapped as they lined the street
For the passing queen of the disco beat…

Well we don’t know about a grand plan
But we’d be so much less without our Nan
Cos she taught us joy and she made us think
So we’d seize life and we would all love
Pink

Yo Michael.

I enjoyed the listens, very easy on the ear.

I was reminded of Soft Cell in the style of the song. The topic/lyric was cool and very thoughtfully done.

The only thing I wasn't fussed on was the compression taking everything away when the vocals are present. I know the general feeling is,'vocals are king',but I prefer things a little less noticeable. This may have been intentional,if so my comments are just a preference and opinion.

Anyway,overall It's a fine song.  8)

Thanks for this Skub, appreciated. I do have a habit of wanting to bring the vocals right out front for songs of a narrative nature - even though I know this tends to divide opinion!  ::)

reminded more of Heaven 17! (think of Lady Ice and Mr Hex) :D

Pleasantly surprised by this. The lyrics didn't really suggest to me how the song would sound but... yeah, nice!  8)

Thanks Sterix, glad you were pleasantly surprised. I quite like ol' Heaven17, so don't mind that comp.  ;)

This is great.

Does have a touch of Soft Cell and the Cure.

Love the vocal effects an definitely like your nan....she sounds cool.

Excellent  lyrics..

Hi Michael, I really liked this. Touch of the Shadows in the intro and then it's very early 80's retro. Certainly thought there were touches of Soft Cell, I think it's the melody and your vocal style that contribute to that. Good for you for trying something different, I think it works very well, and that riff sure gets stuck in your head  :)

Hi @pompeyjazz , well you certainly nailed me as an early 80s buff. Life was simple then. Remember those two gorgeous blondes in Bucks Fizz. And the girls weren't bad looking either!  :)

Also thanks Sandeep @Movin Flavour, nan does indeed sound cool, but in reality she is based on someone else's nan sadly - a very spirited and feisty old lady with a wicked laugh, vicious tongue and great fun to be around! If you were brave enough, that is!

Hi, I enjoyed this a lot.  More than the 80s references I got an early Pulp vibe from it.  It's less cynical than Jarvis' stuff though, and a neat, touching, life-affirming celebration of growing old disgracefully.  Your voice reminds me a bit of the guy from Psychic TV, you sound like you are enjoying singing it which I think is really important. Plenty of upbeat energy throughout and an irresistible little Hank Marvin riff that keeps popping up... great stuff.
It's all too beautiful.

EXCELLENT

Really dig this, your voice is perfect for this, love the BVox arrangement.

There's a bit of Petshop boys in the talking bit...

Really enjoyable..

Thank you

Hi @PaulyX , well if I am bringing Jarvis and Hank Marvin to mind, I reckon that is a nifty mash up, so I will take that, thanks. Cheered me up has that!  ;D

Cheers @cowparsleyman , glad you approved of the vocals given you are aware that this doesn't always go well for me! But maybe part of successful vocal performances is trying to find a style that you are comfortable with. Who knows!?  ;)
