I've got an old IPad I don't think that will be compatible

There are lots of solutions for you

It would be helpful if you can give a little more info about exactly what you currently have, your budget, the quality you are after and your plan for the future

What I mean is...

Are you after something that will give a reasonable recording quality on a budget - in which case getting a Shure SM58 and a lead you can plug in to your "headphone" socket would probably be ok

For better quality recordings you would want to bypass the iPad's pre-amp by going in through the iPad connector socket (lightning conector on newer laptops)

You may need the "Camera Connection Kit" to give you a USB socket to plug an audio interface in to

If you plan to expand your setup in the future you may want to get a decent vocal mic and audio interface that will be compatible with a Mac/PC in the future - rather than going for an "ipad only" solution now

Your budget is also probably the biggest factor - how much do you want to pay!?!?!

In that case do you actually need a mic - does the iPad mic not do the job well enough?

Something like this might me worth a look:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/IK-Multimedia-Handheld-Microphone-iPhone/dp/B004IA8F50/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1523906869&sr=8-2&keywords=irig+mic

Coupled with this:

Would give you a very versatile set up on a budget

Hi Katie,

IMHO, I would possibly save up and go for a laptop and low cost interface.

I can imagine the storage on the ipad being an issue.

Cheers

Hi Katie,

If you have something like an Intel I3 and a couple of gig of RAM, bit of hard drive storage, you should be able to run basic DAW and a USB interface.

I think Presonus studio, basic version is free, Failing that Audacity is free.

Hope this helps.

Hi katie,

I also use Garageband and a very old IPad 2. I bought a Rode NT condenser Microphone which is generally very well regarded but i have found it difficult to work with. I actually found the microphone in the Ipad was just as good and found my best results lying on my back, holding it in front of my face and singing into it!
