For a moment I thought my Muse had deserted me. I was in a song-writing mood this afternoon but I was really struggling to write anything. And then this hit me like a trainful of inspiration!

Started off with part of a line (I know that you know...) and suddenly there was a tune there; a playful little tune full of potential. It was that tune that defined the rest of the line and directed where it was going to go. It was going to be a song about the end of a relationship... but one that has run it's course and neither are really sad about it (at least, that was the idea it was leaning towards).

My only problem was that the I know that you know part sounded chorusy (is there such a word - if not I'm laying claim to it!) but the lyrics didn't really lend themselves to being repeated. So it had to be one of those where the chorus had to have different lyrics each time. Oh well, more work for my brain then! There are couple of words/phrases I'm not over-happy with, but they can wait until I come to look at it again.

Anyway, here it is. Wish I could sing it for you but I wouldn't want a restraining order taken out on me!

CHORUS
Well I know that you know that I know you're cheating
We're going in circles. The past keeps repeating
This cycle of self-loathing hatred we're feeding
Is driving us slowly insane

Well you know that I know that you know it's over
We're both of us bearing the weight on our shoulders
Of trying to make it all work, but it's no good
It's time to surrender again

VERSE
We tried to touch the stars
To change our fate
To heal our scars
But in the end our hearts
Prone to mistakes
Can't reach that far

CHORUS
And you know that I know that you know I love you
But that's not enough when you flinch when I touch you
That look in your eyes can't be masked, so I come to
Believe that I should walk away

And I know that you know that I know you're leaving
There's no use pretending that we both don't see it
We're both past the point of that dark self-deceit
Where we try to pretend it's okay

VERSE
We gave it all we could
Desire burned
Our hearts like wood
Perhaps we never should
Have given birth
To twisted love

EXTRA
When you know... that I know... that we know... YES WE KNOW
We know... it's time to go... it's time to go... our separate ways!

INSTRUMENTAL

CHORUS (2nd VERSION)
It's time to say...

That you know that I know that you know that I know
That you know it's to go!
And I know that you know that I know that you know
That I know our time is done!

CHORUS
I know that you know that I know forever
Was never a hope for us staying together
Eternity ends here on Earth, not in Heaven
Goodbye, we will not meet again

You know that I know that you know I loved you
But I can't hold on this thing we have come to
Believe was two ships passing by on the ocean
Now we both of us sail different ways

You know and I know it's over...

Hi,
Your lyrics are very good. I would love to hear them set to music with a vocal as i think that would make even more sense.
BUT...as they are just lyrics they are still very clear to me about what is going in this broken relationship.
So for me right now just from the lyrics the idea is a very good one and well worth developing.

Johnny :)
