Many years ago William Shakespeare is said to have written this sonnet and about 25 years ago I wrote the music to it.
I played it many times in the theater back then. I later played it in my own gigs after a more rockin' song.
A "keep 'em on their toes" sort of strategy. I'm not sure if it worked but I enjoyed playing it.
This version I recorded about 2 years ago.
There are other arrangements in youtube Etc. I don't care for them much.
I may have changed a word or two here n' there.
Feedback welcome.https://soundcloud.com/rightly/comeawaydeath-1And here are the original lyrics:
Come Away Death
Come away, come away, death,
And in sad cypress let me be laid.
Fly away, fly away, breath;
I am slain by a fair cruel maid.
My shroud of white, stuck all with yew,
O, prepare it!
My part of death, no one so true
Did share it.
Not a flower, not a flower sweet,
On my black coffin let there be strown.
Not a friend, not a friend greet
My poor corpse, where my bones shall be thrown.
A thousand thousand sighs to save,
Lay me, O, where
Sad true lover never find my grave,
To weep there!_________________________________________
